Myra Jean McCarty, 70, Maxbass, ND, passed away May 28, 2018 at Trinity Hospital of Minot, ND.
Myra was born January 11, 1947 in Bismarck, ND. She was the first-born daughter of Emil and Ione (Wentz) Schwartzwalter of Streeter, ND. She enjoyed her 4 siblings: Merna, Gregory, Melanie and Melita. Raised on a farm 5 miles west of Streeter, she attended a one room country schoolhouse for grades 1 through 8, then graduated from Streeter High School.
As a young girl in Streeter, Myra attended the E.U.B. Church. There she grew in her faith for a lifetime with her belief and commitment to Jesus her Savior. She shared that faith with others and enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school.
It was in Steele that Myra met her future husband Lynn McCarty. She attended NDSU from 1964 – 1968, graduating with a degree in Home Economics. In 1968, Myra married Lynn David McCarty, a gentleman farm boy from Drake, ND, when he returned from his tour of duty in the Vietnam War. Myra and Lynn were blessed with 2 daughters: Stephanie and Lindsey. Stephanie was born in Fargo, graduated from Newburg High School and NDSU. Lindsey was born in Billings, MT and lived to the age of 22. Lindsey required special care and received tender love and caring from her parents and big sister Stephanie. They were later blessed even more with grandchildren Audrey and Nathan. Audrey is currently attending the same college in Bottineau, ND that her Grandpa Lynn attended over 50 years ago.
Myra and Lynn enjoyed their home in the country where together they produced bountiful vegetable and flower gardens. Myra attended many flower shows; gladiolas were her favorite and 1st prize winners.
In Myra’s earlier years of employment she worked for large banks in Minneapolis and Fargo; in doing this she followed in her mother Ione’s footsteps who had long been employed at the Bank of Steele. Myra also was a teacher of Home Economics at Newburg High School for several years. Her favorite job was homemaker.
Myra struggled with her health beginning at age 20 when she became diabetic. 20 years later she had renal failure and needed a kidney transplant. She became a donor candidate and received a kidney and pancreas transplant at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 1989. She was one of some 25 patients at that time to have this innovative surgery that ended her diabetes the moment the pancreas was attached. She was one of the longest survivors from those patients, living for 29 years after the surgery. During annual checkups at Rochester’s Mayo Clinic Myra and Lynn would visit the organ donor’s family to share their gratitude for this lease on life.
Myra loved life, God and family. Her last few months in a nursing home and then final 4 days in the hospital were visibly no longer a good quality of life for her. Her family was there for her, talking in to her listening ear when her eyes never opened again. Words of love went in to her ears before she breathed her last breath and then God took her in to his care.
Myra is survived by her husband, Lynn, Maxbass; daughter, Stephanie (Jon) Gilbraith, Glenburn; grandchildren, Audrey and Nathan, both of Glenburn; siblings, Merna (Jim) Bredwick, Arnegard, Gregory (Linda) Schwartzwalter, Moorhead, MN, Melanie (Jon) Loy, Worthington, MN and Melita (David) Hildahl, Montevideo, MN; in-laws, Ronald McCarty, Minot, Myron (Elaine) McCarty, Minneapolis, MN, Peggy (Ron) Kruchwitz, St. Paul, MN, Jay (Barb) McCarty, West Fargo, Wayne (Connie) McCarty, MN, Roger (Marcia) McCarty, Sioux Falls, SD, Galen (Sandy) McCarty, Kansas and Joel (Becky) McCarty, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Myra was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Lindsey McCarty.
