Obituary from the Red Cloud Chief, March 23, 1995
Charles Bertrand Schultz died March 7, 1995 at Lincoln, Nebraska. He was born to Charles A and Esther Peterson Schultz at Red Cloud June 17, 1908. He was a brother to the late Helen M Kent of Red Cloud. His ashes along with those of his wife Marian (Othmer) are to be interred in the Red Cloud Cemetery and marked with a boulder from their Hill Top home north of Lincoln.
Dr Schultz attended the Red Cloud Schools graduating in 1926 after which he pursued college and graduate studies at the University of Nebraska received B SC, M SC and Ph D Degrees. His associating with the University of Nebraska spans a period of 58 years, his faculty rank dating back to 1938. He served as Director of the University of Nebraska State Museum for 35 years.
Dr Schultz was among those to contributed to the beginning of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and remained an active member of its Board of Governors until his death. His Indian relics, collected in the thirties, were among the original displays at the first Cather Museum. In 1959, he supervised University personnel in the construction of a contour map of the western half of Webster County which depicts the topography of the locales of six Cather novels. This map hangs today in the Cather Museum.
Dr Schultz pursued a distinguished professional career studying the changing world environment and the migrations and extinctions of animals and plants. He and wife Marian studied in over 60 different countries and published over 200 scientific articles and monographs. He is recognized internationally as an authority in the fields of Paleontology, Geology, Water Resources, Ecology and Early Man. In recognition of his global accomplishments, the Nebraska Legislature declared May 30, 1971 to be "C Bertrand Schultz Day" and the Red Cloud designated him as a "Notable Native Son."
Throughout their lifetime the couple have generously endowed the Nebraska Academy of Sciences, enabling them to purchase a remaining untouched section of native grass prairie in Webster County for College and High School studies, to establish a research arboretum at the Hill Top home estate and to establish annual scholarships. They also funded the Red Cloud Methodist Church Endowment Foundation with a $100,000 grant.
Dr Schultz is survived by two daughters, Tranda Fischelis, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Donna Wilcox, Papillion, Nebraska and by two granddaughter, Marnie Cummins and Amanda Wilcox.
