      Edna Loretta Langenheder
Edna Loretta Langenheder reached the end of a long, productive, well spent life on March 28, 2009, after a battle with cancer.
Mrs. Langenheder was born to Edward and Emma (Stoller) Laib on October 11, 1925. Her childhood and youth were spent on their farm near Warden with her six sisters and four brothers who were her best friends throughout her life. After graduating from Warden High School in 1943, she went to work as a grocery checker at the Ritzville Trading Company. She later moved to the dry goods department and then to working in the office.
Not long after that, her father retired from farming and moved his family to Ritzville, except for his son, Alvin, who took over the family farm. Edna and her sisters enjoyed ?city? life in Ritzville where they were closer to friends and shopping and fun things to do. Her math skills helped her to get a new job as a teller at the Old National Bank in Ritzville.
In 1951, she married Lynn Langenheder. Throughout their 40-year marriage they were friends and partners. Together they raised three children and farmed a wheat and cattle ranch outside Ritzville.
In addition to being a young wife and mother, she grew flowers and vegetables and raised chickens. Anyone who visited or worked at the Langenheder ranch will remember the excellent meals she cooked. She loved cooking, baking and canning. Her two daughters were among the best dressed in their elementary and junior high classes in the clothes she made for them. The decor of her home was accented with items that she knitted, crocheted, sewed or hand crafted herself.
As a Brownie scout leader, she was able to unleash her creativity to invent a craft project for her troops every week. Edna was enthusiastic about 4-H. She encouraged her daughters to participate in cooking and sewing clubs and her son to raise calves in the livestock club.
She felt that it was a valuable experience for her children to enter projects reflecting their current interests in the fair. She assisted them by building miniature floats for the Pet Parade, supervising sewing projects and holding her breath during livestock judging.
Throughout her adult life, she attended the Philadelphia Congregational Church where she and Lynn were married.
After Lynn passed away in 1991, the greatest joy of Edna?s life was her grandchildren. She rejoiced over the many achievements of her daughter, Lorna?s children, Nathan and Katrina, in Bothell. Her son, Mark?s, stepdaughter, Ashley, was her knitting buddy. Mark?s son, Wyatt, was Edna?s faithful companion in numerous adventures. Mark?s little daughter, Bailey, learned at a very early age that Grandma believed in the importance of reading to young children. It is possible that she holds the world?s record for most books read to a grandchild at one sitting.
Edna was preceded in death by her brothers, Herbert and Alvin Laib, and her sisters, Irma Floether, Verna Burghard and Lillian Nix. She is survived by her sisters, Lenora Sackmann of Lind, Della Kiesz of Ritzville and June Larsen of Vancouver, Wash., and her brothers, Delmar Laib of Warden and Harvey Laib of Sacramento, Calif.; her daughter, Vicki Hurley, and husband, Rocky, live in Burien; her younger daughter, Lorna, and husband, Sam, live in Bothell with their two children; her son, Mark, and his family continue to live in Ritzville. When Mark brought Misty Langworthy into his life, he brought his mother a true friend, as well as a new daughter. Mark and Misty cared for Edna faithfully throughout her final illness.
A funeral will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 3, at Danekas Funeral Home, 207 E. Main Avenue in Ritzville.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to Adams County 4-H at 1028 W. Koch Road, Ritzville, WA 99169. Donations made in Edna?s name will be used to provide special awards for youth exhibiting excellence in food science at the Wheat Land Communities? Fair.
