In 1870, the twins, Alfred and Elbert, were working on their fatherâ„¢s farm.
According to a posting online, Albert "Jim" Cochran and his new wife Margaret Elizabeth "Liz" spent their honeymoon on the Oregon Trail with her parents and siblings. Liz died in childbirth in 1897, leaving Jim with 11 children. He couldn't work and take care of the little ones so he adopted out the two youngest--John and Floyd. Apparently they were raised a few miles from the family home and in one case it took years for the older siblings to locate him. I've wondered why someone else in the family didn't take the boys. It could be that times were hard and nobody could afford any more mouths to feed.
