Ella Kleingartner, 90, Fredonia, N.D., died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Center, Jamestown.
Ella Lorina Hiller was born April 6, 1912, near Fredonia, the daughter of Fred D. and Bertha (Grosz) Hiller. She attended a rural school north of Fredonia, and the public school in Fredonia to complete her education. She was baptized and confirmed in the Nazareth Congregational Church, Fredonia. She married Christ Kleingartner on June 19, 1932, in Fredonia. They spent a number of years farming and resided on farms north and south of Fredonia. In 1945 they moved into Fredonia and continued to farm until 1954. From 1950 to 1951 they lived in Kulm, where they also operated the Kulm Cafe. She was also an assistant postal clerk at the Fredonia Post Office and spent many years working with a cleaning and painting group. She was a janitor for the Nazareth Congregational Church for many years. He died on Sept. 28, 1973. She continued to live in Fredonia, until February 2001, when she moved to Jamestown. She was a lifelong member of the Nazareth Congregational Church, Fredonia, where she was involved in the Women's Guiding Light Society and served as church treasurer for many years. She enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, baking and singing.
She is survived by two daughters, Adella (Harold) Kjos, Jamestown, and Judith (Mel) Schmitz, Park Rapids, Minn.; two brothers, Wilbert (Doris), Gainsville, Ga., and Fred P., Fredonia; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; stepmother, Lydia Hiller; a brother, Joseph; three sisters, Nora Mueller, Elda Tvete and Norma Buchholz; two sisters-in-law, Elaine Halldorson and Dorothy Hiller; and three brothers-in-law, Albert Mueller, Edward Tvete and Wesley Buchholz.
Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nazareth Congregational Church, Fredonia, with the Rev. Bill Bradley officiating.
Prayer service: 7 p.m. Friday, Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Kulm.
Visitation: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church.
Burial: Nazareth Congregational Cemetery, rural Fredonia.
