Helia Marie Sylvia (Salmonson) Trautman was born on February 9, 1909, to Marcus and Ina (Grape) Salmonson on the family farm west of Estelline in Brookings County. She attended rural school and then graduated from Arlington High School in 1926. She received her teaching certificate from General Beadle State Teachers College in 1927 and taught a rural school prior to her marriage to Theodore Trautman on June 18, 1928. Helia returned to teaching in 1952, and taught a total of 22 years. She taught the first four grades in Dempster for 12 years. Her college years were spent at General Beadle at Madison, Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and she attended one summer session at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. She retired in 1972. Helia died on Friday, November 21, 2008 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center at the age of 99 years, 9 months and 12 days.
She was a member of the United Church of Christ, Women's Fellowship of the church, Order of the Eastern Star, Women's Study Club, Estelline Senior Citizens, AARP, and the Brookings Alzheimers Support Group. She had been a member of the local library board for more than 20 years. She and Ted enjoyed travel and visited 49 states before his health failed. Since retirement, Helia has spent her time enjoying reading, knitting, e-mailing friends and relatives and doing volunteer work for the city and the Estelline Nursing and Care Center. In 1996 she was honored at the Jefferson Day Volunteer's Banquet in Sioux Falls and was presented a certificate by Sen. Tom Daschle. She was also the first director of Meals-On-Wheels in Estelline, serving 11 years.
She is survived by her son CMSgt (USAF Ret.) Lawrence Larry Trautman of Sanford, FL; two grandchildren, Lindsey Trautman of Shreveport, LA, Liana Smith and her husband Les of Haughton, LA; two great grandchildren, Jason and Jana Smith; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Salmonson of Sauk Rapids, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
Helia was preceded in death by her husband Ted on July 1, 1996, her parents and all of her siblings.
