John Karnatz, son of Mary and Fritz Karnatz was born in Pomerania Germany, April 6, 1857 and departed this life March 8, 1951, being 93 years, 11 months and 2 days.
He came with his parents from Germany in 1870 and for a number of years resided at Thorton, Illinois, coming later to Jewell County.
On October 3, 1885 he was united in marriage to Lena Sund. To this union were born eight children, Minnie, Charles, Rosa, Otto, Ernest, Eddie, Effie and Walter.
After their marriage they lived on a homestead, eight miles north and two west of Burr Oak, later moving to St Francis, Kansas. In 1898, returning to Jewell County on a farm north of Burr Oak, living there until two years ago. Since that time have been residents of Burr Oak.
Mr Karnatz was kindly cared for in his youngest daughters home since the passing of his wife, almost three months ago. Four children preceded him in death, Minnie and Rosa in infancy, Charles and Eddy giving their lives for their country in World War I, one brother and two sisters.
Those remaining to mourn his loss are: three sisters, Mrs Lizzie Schultz of Guide Rock, Neb.; Mary Karnatz of Edgar, Neb.; Emma Rath of St Francis, Kansas; three sons, Otto and Walter of Burr Oak, Kansas and Ernest of Guide Rock, Neb.; one daughter Effie Morris of Burr Oak, Kansas; nine grandchildren; three great grandchildren, other relatives and host of friends.
He gave his heart to the Lord early in life and lived a consistent Christian life. He was a member of the Evangelical Church for a number of years, later transferring his membership to the Wesley Center Church. He was a faithful member in attendance as long as health permitted and was greatly missed when he was not able to be present.
The funeral services were held at the Nazarene Church Saturday afternoon, March 10, 1951, conducted by Rev Archie Harris assisted by Rev M E Walden.
The music was furnished by a quartette composed of Marion McNichols, Ester Patnode, Clell Hancock and Alfred Craighead, accompanied by Mrs Clell Hancock.
The pallbearers were Delbert Kiehl, Clifford Cortner, W H Yetter, Loren Roberson, Elton Gillett and Ralph Billenwilms.
Interment was in the Burr Oak cemetery.
