Lawrence died Monday, March 22, 2004, at the Tri-County Hospital in Lexington.
He was born March 16, 1918, near Smithfield to George and Mary (Fox) Hanson. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1936. He worked on the Tri-County Project and later moved to Buhl, Idaho, where he was employed with a farm equipment company.
On June 7, 1941, he married Ruth Daiss at Buhl, Idaho. On April 2, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and saw extensive duty overseas. Following his discharge on Oct. 8, 1945, the couple returned to Elwood where he purchased an implement dealership, operating as Hanson Implement until 1965.
He served as Superintendent of Utilities in the Village of Elwood for 21 years, and later worked for Leggott Plumbing. He was a lifetime member of St. John's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus at Smithfield and has served on the church board for 39 years.
He had a permanent membership in the Elwood Legion Post No. 290. He had served on the Elwood Village Board for 16 years and the Gosper County Selective Service Board for 23 years. He was a past member of the Elwood Lion's Club, Chamber of Commerce and had served on the volunteer fire department.
During his lifetime, L.V. enjoyed farming and raising cattle on an acreage near Smithfield. The couple enjoyed traveling, which included trips to Florida, Texas and Nevada. In 2001 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary and during those 60 years they made annual trips to visit family in Idaho. He had a great appreciation for God, life, family, the good earth and many friends.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hanson, Elwood; two sons, Dennis (fianc?, Malika Cambra) Hanson, Boulder City, Nev., and Doug (Jackie) Hanson, Hickman; two brothers, Donald (Phyllis) Hanson, and Robert Hanson, all of Smithfield; two granddaughters, Corrin (Andy) Weekly, Lincoln, and Kimberly Hanson, Tempe, Ariz.; and a great-granddaughter, Emma Weekly.
Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today, March 24, at St. John's Catholic Church in Smithfield, with the rosary to be recited tonight at 6:30 p.m., also at the church.
A memorial has been established in his memory. Berryman Funeral Home of Cozad is in charge of arrangements.
