Marlys Marie Folkens was born July 19, 1923 to Elmer and Evelyn (Kosse) Christians in Grant County, Milbank, S.D. She graduated from the Milbank High School in 1943. She married Carl Folkens on Jan. 25, 1945 at the parsonage in Clinton. She lived in Portland, Ore. while he was in the service and returned to Clinton Aug. 6, 1946, where they farmed. They were blessed with five children, Charles, Linda, Judy, Douglas and Barbara. She took great pride in raising her children and supporting them throughout their lives and continued this with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed traveling to sporting activities and took a keen interest in how her children and grandchildren did. One of her favorite things was family time at the lake together. She enjoyed baking wonderful cakes and cookies for her family and playing games with her grandchildren, even though grandma's rules especially favored her. Her family and friends will greatly miss the stories she told knowing that she "never let a few good facts get in the way of a good story."
She and her husband celebrated 58 wonderful years together prior to his passing in 2003. Following his death, she moved into the Apple Ridge Independent Living in Appleton. The couple was active members of the United Methodist Church throughout their lives.
Survivors include her five children: Charles (Donna) Folkens of Big Lake, Linda (Richard) Ehrenberg of Correll, Judy (Donald) Puffer of Southwick, Mass., Douglas (Sharon) Folkens of Hector, and Barbara Hannes of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Christians; one sister, Beverly (Phillip) Peterson; four sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Donovan) Tesch, Leola Lovgren, Rita Folkens and Isabella Folkens; and one brother-in-law, Jay (Doris) Folkens.
