Marvin Nathan Lutz was born July 21, 1936 to Christ and Ida (Hirsch) Lutz. Marvin was the eighth of ten children born on the family farm in Java, SD. As a young man Marvin helped his father and siblings on the farm. As he reached adulthood he found himself going into the town of Eureka for a little adventure.
Marvin met Gertrude Brandner in Eureka, and where their courtship began. On October 27, 1957 Marvin and Gert were united in marriage in Eureka. Being a little adventurous, Marvin and Gert decided to move to Mobridge and he found a job working at a gas station. After about a year, Marv and Gert decided to move to Aberdeen. In Aberdeen, Marvin worked for Cass Clay delivery, he then began a job at Hanson Deeprock gas station/repair shop. It was here where he first learned to weld. When the repair shop was purchased by Harold Weismantel, Marvin became part of the package. This started Marvin’s 53 year career and later co-ownership with Farm Power. It was in February of 2015 that Marvin decided the time had come to retire.
Marvin spent 47 years with his wife Gert who passed away in 2004. They were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Aberdeen. Marvin and Gert spent many years enjoying bowling, gardening and camping with family. Their home always had an open door of which many young people came in. Marvin always said, “If they were at his house, he knew they were safe and taken care of.” After losing his wife, Marvin later met Christina Heinz and developed a close relationship with her and her family.
Grateful for having shared Marvin’s life are his children: Tina Lutz, Carmen (Mike) Bakken, Scott (Christi) Lutz, and Bobbie (Dennis) Johnson; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters: Norma (Oliver) Oswald, Ruth (Lavern) Gill, and Darlene Lindemann; two brothers: Leland (Phyllis) Lutz and Richard (Sharron) Lutz; and one sister-in-law: Carol (Arnie) Lutz.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents: Christ and Ida Lutz; wife: Gertrude; sister Verna Pfiefle; as well as his brothers Wilford, Deloyd and Arnie Lutz.
