Mervyn H. Brandenburg 82 of Wessington Springs died Wednesday afternoon July 18, 2012 at the Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket. Funeral services were held Monday, July 23, at the United Methodist Church in Wessington Springs with Pastor Martin Avery officiating. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery with military rites by the Wessington Springs American Legion and the South Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.
Mervyn Herman Brandenburg was born January 3, 1930, in Jerauld County, South Dakota, to Herman and Anna (Lehr) Brandenburg. The family lived on a farm north of Lane.
Mervyn graduated from Lane High School in 1947. He entered farming with his father until enlisting in the US Marine Corp on April 14, 1952, where he served in the Korean War. Upon discharge in 1954, he returned to the family farm for a short period of time.
His first job off the farm was at Patton Chevrolet Auto Dealership in Wessington Springs, SD.
Mervyn married Betty Vavra on June 26, 1955. Three daughters were born to this union; Leanne, Carla, and Shelley. Mervyn and Betty ventured into the business world. They owned and operated the Idle Hour Tavern until 1964. They then owned and operated the Standard Oil business while also accomplishing a small farm business and a small mechanic business on the side for several years. Mervyn became employed with the Wessington Springs School District in 1968 and retired from the position of Transportation Manager in 1992.
Upon his "formal" retirement, Mervyn then became employed on a part-time basis with Basham Funeral Service in Wessington Springs and Woonsocket until his health no longer permitted.
Mervyn was a hard worker but always prioritized family and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent many hours hunting and fishing with his family. He enjoyed socializing with many friends at dances, card parties, and camping trips through the years. He attended all the activities of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a great support to all family members.
Mervyn is survived by his three daughters: Leanne (Duane) Kopfmann of Alpena, SD, Carla (Rick) LeVeque of Rapid City, SD, and Shelley (Mark) Fuerst of Wessington Springs, SD; four grandchildren: Kandy (Doug) Flowers of Wessington Springs, SD, Andrea Kopfmann of Minneapolis, MN, Ericka LeVeque of Rapid City, SD, and Traci Orth of Wessington Springs, SD; four Great Grandchildren: Chandler, Trinity, Branden, and Colby Flowers of Wessington Springs, SD; two sisters: Eunice Anderson and Beverly Williams; one step-sister: Marguerite Frye; one brother-in-law: Edward (Marilyn) Vavra of Wessington Springs, SD; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, (Betty), his parents, his step-mother (Rose), one special aunt (Sophia Kalkbrenner), one nephew, and one niece.
