Jan. 8-Roy Dickinson Welch, Professor of Music at Princeton University since 1935, and organizer of its music department, died here tonight after a long illness. He would have been 66 years old on Jan 19.When Professor Welch came to Princeton, only thirty five students enrolled in the first music course. Six years later, 380 were taking some kind of music study. The college class of 1940 voted him three of the four honorary titles accorded members of the faculty-"favorite professor" "most interesting lecturer" and "most inspiring teacher".Born in Dansville, N.Y. Professor Welch was graduated from the School of Music in the University of Michigan in 1907. Two years later, he received an A. B. from the same University, which made him an honorary Master of Music in 1927. His education also included a year's study at the University of Munich and at the University of Vienna.Professor Welch's teaching career began at the University of Michigan, were he was a piano instructor and instructor in music, music history and compostion. Then he went to Smith College, where he remained for twenty years, becoming Professor of Music and head of the music department. From 1923 to 1934, he was visiting Professor of Music at Harvard in the summer.Since 1938, Professor Welch had been a member of the board of directors of the Naumburg Foundation. During the closing period of the first World War, he served in France as a captain in the American Red Cross. He was the author of "The Study of Music in the American College", "The Appreciaton of Music" and various magazine articles and book reviews.In 1911, Professor Welch married Mildred Scott, who died in 1917. Three years later, he married Sylvia Eastman Spencer, by whom he had two daughters and two sons.
