Years before the Revolution, there came to this country, from Germany, Mathias Lair, or Leher, as they were named in their native land.  He had six sons, all of whom were Revolutionary soldiers.  Their names were Mathias, Andrew, Joseph, Charles, and William, who was killed in Greene's retreat from South Carolina, and John, who was at Harmar's defeat.  Charles married a Miss Anderson.  John married Miss Custer, of Rockingham county, Virginia.  He was in the War of 1812.  Wesley Lair, son of John Lair, married Catherine Smiser.  Hon. A.H. Wood married Helen, daughter of Wesley Lair.  Mathias, grandfather of the venerable Newton Lair, of Harrison county, was a captain in the Revolution and witnessed the surrender of Cornwallis.  When he received his pay, in Continental scrip, he paid $600 for a pair of boots and silver cuff buttons.  Newton Lair, at the age of eighty-six years, is still a remarkable conversationalist, and is the most reliable historian in this county.
