Calvin Engel was born October 11, 1912, to Henry and Lydia Engel at Alpena, SD. He grew up in the Alpena area, graduating from Alpena High School in 1930. He farmed with his father and attended Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD, until 1937, at which time he graduated with a BS Degree. He accepted a teaching position at Phillip, SD. In 1938, he moved to St. Lawrence, SD, where he taught music and business classes.
He married Anna Mary Fisher of Miller, SD on August 12, 1938. They were married in the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, IA. They lived in St. Lawrence and Wessington Springs, SD.
On June 10, 1943, Cal was drafted by the United States Army and reported to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He attended Adjunct General School at Fort Sam Huston in San Antonio, TX. During his time in the service, Cal served as a translator and interrogator. He received the rank of Tech Sergeant and was honorably discharged from the service in 1946, at which time he was assigned to Fort Leavenworth as a Vocational Counselor at the Separation Center.
He and his brother, Arthur, purchased the Hudson Garage in Aberdeen which they operated until 1949, when they established Engel Music Supply, also in Aberdeen. In 1956, they sold the music store and both went back to teaching. Cal accepted the position as music teacher and principal at Simmons Junior High School. He retired from the Aberdeen school system in 1978, and he then accepted the position with the Aberdeen Development Corporation from which he retired in 1986. His wife, Anna Mary, died on August 1, 1988.
Cal stayed active in the civic life of the community. Cal was a member of the Sidney L. Smith Post of the American Legion, the Last Man’s Club, the Bugle and Drum Corp, the Aberdeen Kiwanis Club where he served as President and Lt. Governor of District 16. He was a member and officer of the AARP, a charter member of the Dakota Heritage Barbershop Chorus, and a member and officer of the Aberdeen Federal Credit Union. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, a member and director of the choir and a member of the Aberdeen Regional Airport Board. He had a deep interest in aviation and had received his commercial and multi-engine ratings.
He married Doris Beckler on June 24, 1989. They lived on a farm south of Aberdeen until 1991 when they moved in to town.
Cal is survived by two sons: Allan and James (Darci) Engel; two grandsons and one granddaughter.
Cal was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mary; parents: Henry and Lydia Engel; two brothers: Dr. Arthur Engel, and William Engel; one sister, Lydia Engel Wood; and wife, Doris.
