George Steinhoff was born in Monroe county, Ohio, on June 4, 1858. He departed his life at the home of Lloyd Beebe, Holly Springs, Iowa, on January 27, 1940 at 9:45 p.m., having attained the ripe age of 81 years, 7 months, and 23 days.
He was baptized in early infancy and took his Confirmation vows in adolescent age. These sacraments took place in the Woodsfield Evangelical Church in the state of Ohio.
He was united in Holy Wedlock with Elizabeth Eberly. This union was blessed with five children. Mrs. Steinhoff, one son, and two daughters preceded him to the Great Beyond.
In the year of 1884 the Steinhoff family moved from Monroe county, Ohio, to a farm near Holly Springs, Iowa. Mr. Steinhoff resided on this farm until a year ago. During the past year he made his home with the Lloyd Beebe family.
Mr. Steinhoff enjoyed good health until the last five years, when his physical condition became somewhat weakened. His strength, however, did not fail him until the beginning of this year.
He was known as one of the early settlers of this community. The German City church takes great pride in his spiritual achievements in God’s cause. He was one of the founders of this church and much of his energy was directed toward these spiritual ends. His work in this church will live on to the glory of God and to the good of this community.
He leaves to mourn his departure two children, William Steinhoff and Mrs. Lloyd Beebe of Holly Springs, three sisters, Mrs. Jake Egger of Holly Springs, Julia Feldner of Orange, California, and Mathilda Rose of Bloomfield, Nebraska, one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, six grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at the German City church, Rev. W.W. Kramme, local pastor, officiating. A quartet composed of Mrs. J.L. Peters, Mrs. Bunnie Cheeley, Lester Harrison, and E. W. Persinger, accompanied by Mrs. Ed Helming, rendered appropriate numbers. Interment was in the German City cemetery.
