Elva Caroline Gosch was born October 16, 1923 to Cornelius & Anna Ludemann Gosch in a farmhouse on the Ponca Creek by Naper, NE. She was the third of five children. Throughout her childhood they lived on various farms in the Naper & Jamison, NE areas.
She attended the McCumber School, graduated from the 8th grade and then began working for various families helping with their children. She was baptized & confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Jamison. She married Al on January 19, 1945. They had 4 children.
Her mother taught her to sew and this skill served her well all her life. She made wedding gowns, bridesmaids gowns, skirts with hankies that matched.
Western shirts were a specialty with lots of stitching & grippers.
Her mother & grandmother taught her to crochet. This, too, served her well. Everyone in the family has at least 1 afghan, as well as all the doilies they wanted.
We still have baby afghans for the new babies that will be coming. The last afghan she made was in December of 2013; it sold at the Burke Hospital Gala in December of 2014.
Her first date with Al was at the celebration at the White Horse Ranch. She was 14 or 15 at the time. Al went to the army & they continued to correspond and married when he was home on leave. The wedding was in the Lutheran Church in Naper, NE, with a reception at Grandma & Grandpa Gosch’s farm.
Al was stationed at Fort Hood in Kaleen, TX, where they lived in a tiny trailer. Elva worked in a cafeteria & the camp PX.
They lived on a farm east of Fairfax until 1989 where Elva did everything a farm wife and mother did. Since Elva didn’t drive, they went everywhere together. They attended many school and community events in Fairfax and the surrounding area.
In 1989, they had a farm sale & moved to a house in Burke where they lived until health issues sent them to Parkview Manor where they lived in the same apartment as Grandma Nicolaus had.
She went to live at the Haisch Haus in Bonesteel in December of 2013 and to the Gregory Nursing Home in June of 2014.
During her life she was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Fairfax & Herrick, the LWML at the church in Fairfax, the Hospital Auxiliary in Burke, and the Senior Citizen Center in Burke.
The Hospital Thrift Center became her passion. She spent many hours sorting, marking, making pillows, and visiting there.
Elva was preceded in death by her husband, Al, her son, Stan, her parents, her in laws, her sister, Betty, and brothers, Albert & John.
She is survived by her children, Mary Lee (Jerry) Podhradsky, Connie (Dan) Schmitz, Jimmie (Janet) Nicolaus, daughter in law Joyce (Stan’s wife) Nicolaus, 12 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, her sister Myrna Beauchamp; sisters-in-law, Irene Gosch and Martha Grohs; brother-in-law, Harlan Nicolaus and many other family members & friends.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 10:30 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, SD. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Fairfax. There will be a prayer service on Tuesday at 7 PM at Clausen Funeral Home in Burke. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services.
