In 1872 William and Nancy moved from southwest Missouri to what is now Barber County in south central Kansas, where William built the first house. William was a government Indian scout there and settlers used to gather in his house to fight off Indian attacks.In 1879 William began farming and raised horses and cattle until 1886, when he moved his family to Cimarron and the "No Man's Land strip. In 1898, the 53 year old William and a married son rode to Santa Fe, N.M. and enlisted in Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders, where he served with the 1st U.S. Volunteer Calvalry during the Spanish American war.
He was farming in Sun City, Kansas, in 1880, and living with his wife and 8 children.He In 1900, another Cochran family was living next door to William and Nancy (all enumerated as œCockran) in Harrison, Beaver County, Oklahoma: James and Sarah, their three children (James, Daisy and Gracy), and a boarder Wilber Cockran (b. Kansas 1875). It is unknown whether they were related.

Both of Nancy™s parents were born in Tennessee.In the 1850 census, she was enumerated as œAnn. In 1880, Nancy™s mother and brother, Jacob, were farming next door in Sun City, Kansas (as were her in-laws). She and William had 14 children, 10 of whom were living in 1900.In 1920, Nancy Jane was living with her son, Elbert, and his family in Harrison, Cimarron, Oklahoma, close to where her sons Isaac and William lived, as well as her grandsons Clarence, Andy and Buck.

John Cochran, who was a tanner and shoemaker by trade, was a native of Massachusetts, where he was born about the year 1790. He went to Ohio about 1812, and with three of his brothers served in the second war with England. His father was a Scotchman, who served in the Revolutionary War. He was an old-line Whig, and for fifteen years was justice of the peace.
By 1832, he was living in Taylor Township, Greene County IN next to his brother, James. Part of this land is still owned and farmed to this day by descendants of James.
The census records show that in 1850, he and his wife Elizabeth (his second wife) were farming in Taylor, Greene, Indiana. Living with them were children John (20) and William (18) from Johnâ„¢s first marriage, and Mary (12), Henry (9), Sarah (7), Margaret (5), and James (2 months) from his current marriage.By 1860, he had moved to Christian County IL, where he died.

Elizabeth Seaton was of German descent, and was born in Pennsylvania. She married John Cochran in Indiana, and with him moved to the vicinity of Vincennes. Mrs. Elizabeth (Seaton) Cochran died in 1833, having become the mother of five boys: H. Seaton; Elzy and Sydney, both dead; John A., whose name introduces this biographical sketch; and W. H.Seaton, the eldest, resides in Washington, but formerly lived in Barber county, Kansas, from which county he was twice elected representative in the state legislature.

Glass Cochran gave each of his boys a farm and settled his sons around him. Only one of them died in Blandford and he had no children, so posterity is extinct in Blandford. James was 13 when his adopted father brought him to this country. All were from Ireland, but were Scotsmen.
The Cochran family has ever been devoted to the Union, and has made a record of which it may be justly proud. The grandfather was in the Revolutionary War, the father and three brothers served in the War of 1812; John A. and three brothers were in the Civil War, where he was promoted to be a lieutenant, just before he was mustered out. Three sons of H. Seaton Cochran were also soldiers in the Civil War; and the oldest of these, together with his son, was a member of the "Rough Riders," a unique organization of the Spanish-American War.
