Alfred H. Daiss joined his beloved wife, Gladys, to be with their Heavenly Father after 60½ years of marriage, on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 after a six year battle with dementia.
Gladys passed away 12 days previously, on Dec. 30, 2013. They had been living at Wynwood/Brookdale Senior Living Facility in Twin Falls, Idaho for the past 3 1/2 years. His daughter Mary Rebecca (Becky) Daiss Harshman and hospice caregiver, Kris, were by his side.
Alfred was born in Cambridge, Nebraska on Aug. 6, 1927, to Sam and Rebecca Hermann Daiss. He was baptized on Oct. 16, 1927 at St. Johannes Gemeinde Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, Eustis, Neb. and later affirmed his faith by confirmation at Clover Trinity Lutheran Church, Buhl/Filer in 1944.
He and his parents were charter members of St. John's Lutheran Church, Buhl, in which over the years he held various board positions, including Chairman of the Finance Committee, Chairman of the Jubilee Celebration Committee, Elder of the congregation for 18 years and Chairman of the Congregation for numerous years. His life was always centered around his Lutheran faith and the Triune God.
He lived in Nebraska during the Great Depression and Dust Bowl until 1939 when his father decided to go west. Sam and Rebecca loaded up all their possessions in a 1½ ton truck Sam had revamped and moved Al and his two sisters, Ethel and Jean, to eastern Oregon, called the Oregon Project, where they homesteaded for one year before moving to Buhl.
Al resided in Buhl until March 2000 when he and Glady moved to Twin Falls. Al graduated from Buhl High School in 1945 where he lettered in track and football. He cherished the many friends and classmates from high school, many which remained dear friends to this day although many are deceased.
Al attended Albion Teacher's College for one year before returning to help his mother and father and work with his father and Uncle Bill Daiss, doing custom farming. He also began working for Rangen's Inc. as a sales representative throughout Southern Idaho and northern Nevada, until being drafted into the U. S. Army in 1951 during the Korean Conflict.
Al was assigned to the Pacific Co., 155 Infantry Tank Division, although he served his country stateside as a Master Sergeant. While stationed at Camp Atterbury, Ind. and awaiting his honorable discharge, he met the love of his life, Gladys V. Holden at a USO dance.
They were married in Columbus, Indiana at the 1st Baptist Church on June 6, 1953. The first night back in Buhl, Gladys' introduction to Idaho, and the Daiss family, was by "friends" having them ride up and down Main Street and into Gibb's Cigar Store on two donkeys. The following year, their daughter, Mary Rebecca (Becky) Daiss Harshman was born Sept. 27, 1954.
In 1961 Al and Gladys bought the Culligan Soft Water business in Buhl, which they operated together for 17 years. While owning the Culligan business, Al also started taking classes in real estate at the newly formed College of Southern Idaho. He was a realtor for 25 years starting with Western Realty in Buhl and finishing working with Robert Jones Realty in Twin Falls.
Al and Gladys always loved the country, and in 1972, bought an 80 acre farm east of Buhl. Although Al had Chuck Ewing and later his sons farm the land, he and Gladys loved raising chickens (only 1 year), lambs (they were too cute to eat), and feed cattle. He and some of his dear friends, some of which are now deceased, would enjoy getting together to "work" the cattle. After moving to Twin Falls in 2000, they sold the farm in 2003.
In 2006 they also transferred their Lutheran Church membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Twin Falls where they continued active attendance and membership until the past 3 1/2 years, when Al was no longer able to participate.
As well as serving his church, Al believed in always giving back to his community by being a Boy Scout leader, belonging to the Buhl Volunteer Fire Dept. for 26 years, belonging to Buhl Kiwanis Club for 35 years, serving as a school board member of the Buhl School District and serving as Chairman of the Buhl Housing Authority for 26 years. While Becky was in high school, Al and Gladys also served as Co-Youth Counselors with St. John's Lutheran church youth group, Walther League, with friends, Earl and Lelah Meier.
Although Al and Gladys only had one daughter, Becky, they loved all their nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews on down as if they were their own children and grandchildren.
Al is survived by his loving daughter, Becky, of Twin Falls; sister, Ethel Votroubek Hampton DeWalt, of Buhl; sisters-in-law and families in Alabama; nieces, Diana Schroeder Lien (Denny, dec.), Oregon, and family, Charolette (Deward) Schroeder Einfalt, Boise, and family, Patsy (Jack) Votroubek Kinyon, Castleford, and family, Sue Votroubek (Terry Votroubek's wife), Jerome, and family; nephews, Danny (Marge) Votroubek, Meridian, and family, Gary (Sandy) Hicks, Riverside, CA, and family, Dennis (Malika) Hanson, Boulder, NV and family, Craig Hicks, Riverside, CA and Doug (Jackie) Hanson, Hickman, NE, and family. Al is also survived by numerous cousins and their families and friends around the Boise area and Nebraska.
Al was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; both of his parents; three of his sisters, Jean Hicks, Lurlie (Don & Daniel) Schroeder-Jones, Ruth (Lawrence) Hanson; a nephew, Terry Votroubek; a niece, Donna Schroeder Iverson; two of Glady's sisters, Jean and Lou McNatt; seven of his brothers-in-law from Glady's family, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Becky would like to thank Dr. Joseph Ippolito for the comprehensive and compassionate medical care he has provided Al over the last eight years, especially the last six years.
Our family would also like to thank Pastor Roger Sedlmayr of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Twin Falls, for providing strength and compassion and bringing Al's church to both he and Glady when they were no longer able to attend, as well as bringing songs of faith and comfort. We would also like to thank friends of Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Church for their prayers and words of encouragement.
We would also like to thank the staff of Wynwood/Brookdale Senior Living Facility of Twin Falls for providing loving, supportive and dignified care for the past 3 ½ years to both Al and Glady, especially Connie, LPN.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to Kris, (Al's primary caregiver), Jeannie (Al's Case Manager), and Auburn Crest Hospice for providing compassionate, loving care for our family through these difficult times.
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. - 2 Timothy 4:7,8 King James Version
In celebration of Al's life, it is suggested that memorials be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Twin Falls, or St. John's Lutheran Church, Buhl.
Al's funeral will be conducted by Pastor Roger Sedlmayr 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2014 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2055 Filer Ave. E. in Twin Falls. Visitation will be held at Farmer Funeral Chapel, Buhl, on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014 from 2 - 4 p.m. Committal will be at West End Cemetery, Buhl at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.
Arrangements are under the direction of Farmer Funeral Chapel, Buhl.

Eduard KRAUSE born the 13th of October 1887 in Tarutino, Akkerman, Bessarabia, South Russia was the son of Ferdinand KRAUSE and Justine BIERWAG.
The Eduard KRAUSE family and Aunt Emma, the Gottlieb BUDAU family and the Albert KRAUSE family were all placed in the West Prussian area of Poland in 1941, in the vicinity of Torun. They lived on prosperous farms for 4 years until the advance of the Russian front in January, 1945.
Because of the bitter cold and icy conditions, the horses were shod with special horse-shoes with added grips so they could get some foot-hold. The families traveled with the German Army, fleeing from the advance of the Russian troops.
The Eduard KRAUSE family had 3 wagons, one driven by Eduard, one by his daughter, Lola, and one by a hired man. These were loaded with fodder, household items and supplies – Wilma says they still have the original "Steppe-Kasten" (trunk) brought from Bessarabia by her parents.
The Eduard KRAUSE family and their nephew Arnold Krause emigrated in November, 1949 sailing on the Beaverbrae, and after spending some months in Hilda, Alberta, they settled in the Chilliwack, BC area.

Wilhelm KRAUSE born on the 22 of December 1885 in Tarutino, Akkerman, Bessarabia, South Russia was the eldest son of Ferdinand KRAUSE and Justine BIERWAG.
Wilhelm and his wife Emilie, lived in Klöstitz on the Ost family farm. In 1941 they were sent to the Warthegau area of Poland to work. With them was their daughter-in-law Erna and her son Erich. Their son, Albert was in the German army. (Elvira, their youngest daughter had died in 1927 at age 8.)
Their daughter, Anna (Geigle), was in the same vicinity of the Warthegau area staying with her husband's family. Her husband, Emil, was also in the German army, later he was imprisoned.
At the time of their flight from Poland in 1945, with the Russians an ever-present threat, Wilhelm, Emilie, Erna and Albert and Erna's young son, Erich, were traveling together.
The KRAUSE's daughter Anna, with her three small children, the twins and Fritz, traveled with the GEIGLE family.
They all survived this most difficult trek, and eventually made their home in the Stuttgart area of Germany. Albert KRAUSE, and later Emil GEIGLE arrived home safely after the war.

Ohio Democrat January 11, 1890
William R. Durant died at his residence near Logan, Ohio, January 3d, 1890, aged 76 years, 1 month and 7 days. He was born in England, November 17, 1813, and was married to Elizabeth Andreas in the year 1835. There were born to them 9 children, 22 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He leaves one brother and two sisters. His wife and two children have preceded him to the better land, leaving seven children to mourn. The deceased united with the Methodist Church in 1833, afterwards uniting with the U. B. Church in which he lived until he died. A large number of friends are left to mourn their loss, but their loss is his gain. Thus our neighbors and friends are taken by death, one by one. The old home of this aged brother is now broken up. Father and mother Durant are both dead. This venerable christian will be missed by many, but more by his chilren. They are now done hearing oral counsel from the lips of father, and may it not be that this sad bereavement may have a tendency to deeply rivet on their minds a, father's counsel? The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. N. Lohr, assisted by Rev. Bell, at Morris Chapel, January 5, 1890.

Gladys Daiss passed away Monday, Dec. 30, 2013, at St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls, Idaho, with her daughter, Mary Rebecca (Becky), by her side.
Gladys was born in Russelville, Alabama on Dec. 19, 1923, to Clifton Leon and Mary Rowena Holden. She was the fourth child of 10. Although Gladys was raised during the Great Depression and the family had meager means, there was always plenty of love amongst them. She was raised in the Southern Baptist faith and knew her Savior and Lord. Her father was a traveling song leader and evangelist and her mother cared for the large family.
Gladys graduated in 1943 from Belgreen High School in Alabama. There was no money for college and no work in Alabama, so she moved to Columbus, Indiana, where she worked for 10 years. Her last employment in Indiana was working for a general surgeon, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
She also participated in many activities since Columbus was outside of Indianapolis. She especially loved square dancing and attended the International Square Dance Festival in Chicago in 1951. She was also involved with the National Rural Youth and attended the national training school in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1951 also. While in Indiana, she made many friends and shared a boarding house with three other ladies who kept in close contact with each other throughout the years.
While dancing for the USO, she met the love of her life, a handsome young soldier who was stationed at Camp Atterbury, Ind., named Alfred Herman Daiss. They were married in Columbus, Indiana, at the First Baptist Church on June 6, 1953, and shared 60 loving years together.
Once arriving out west in Buhl, Idaho, she started a new chapter in her life, where Al had lived prior to being in the Army and she was welcomed into the Daiss family. The first night back in Buhl, Gladys' introduction to Idaho, Buhl and the Daiss family, was by "friends" chivalry having them ride up and down Main Street and into Gibb's Cigar Store on two donkeys. The following year, their daughter, Mary Rebecca (Becky) Daiss Harshman, was born Sept. 27, 1954. Gladys always said she and Al wanted to have three children but were blessed to have one.
Once Gladys joined the Daiss family, she was confirmed in the Missouri Synod Lutheran faith and was actively involved with St. John's Lutheran Church in Buhl, where Al and his parents, Sam and Rebecca Daiss, were charter members. As Al held various leadership positions with St. John's, Gladys was also active with the LWML, also holding leadership positions and teaching Sunday school.
In Buhl, they developed many long friendships in their church family as well as the community which they will have throughout their lifetime. While Becky was in high school, Al and Gladys also served as co-youth counselors with St. John's Lutheran church youth group, Walther League, with friends, Earl and Lelah Meier. Al and Gladys also enjoyed snowmobiling with friends, Edna and Karl Werth. Since Al was a member of the Buhl Volunteer Fire Department, Gladys also was a fireman's wife where there was a strong bond. Gladys and Al also loved belonging to the B & C Dance Club and the friendships that were developed.
In 1961, Gladys and Al bought the Culligan Soft Water business in Buhl, which they operated together for 17 years. While owning the Culligan business, Gladys also started working as a substitute rural mail carrier in Buhl until she obtained a rural route of her own, which she carried for an additional 17 years. Gladys and Al always loved the country and, in 1972, bought an 80-acre farm east of Buhl. Although they had Chuck Ewing and later his sons farm the land, they loved raising chickens (only one year), lambs (they were too cute to eat) and feed cattle.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, Gladys enjoyed volunteering at Magic Valley Regional Medical Center for 17 years where again, she developed many friends. In 2000, Al and Gladys moved to Twin Falls and thoroughly enjoyed the home and neighborhood on Hillcrest Drive.
In 2003, they sold the farm and in 2006, they also transferred their church membership to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Twin Falls where they continued active attendance and membership until the past 3½ years when, due to Al's deteriorating condition, they were no longer able to attend. They continued to share their faith by listening to church services and the Lutheran Hour on the radio and having Pastor Sedlmayr conduct services with them at Wynwood Senior Living Facility in Twin Falls.
Gladys is survived by her devoted companion, Al; and daughter, Becky of Twin Falls; sisters, Clara Nelson and Lenora McCarley of Alabama; and sisters-in-law, Ethel Votroubek Hampton DeWalt, of Buhl and Ann Holden of Alabama. She is also survived by the remaining nieces, Debbie Holden, Barbara McNatt and their families; and nephews, Scott Holden, Toni McNatt, Marty McNatt and Kevin Holden and their families in Alabama. She is also survived by nieces, Diana Schroeder Lien of Salem, OR, Charolette Schroeder Einfalt, and Sue Votroubek of Jerome, Idaho, and all their families. Gladys is also survived by nephews, Danny Votroubek, of Meridian, ID, Gary Hicks, of Riverside, CA, Dennis Hanson of Boulder, NV, Craig Hicks of Riverside, CA, and Doug Hanson, of Hickman, NE, and their families.
Gladys was preceded in death by both of her parents and her in-laws; five brothers, Sherman Holden, Wallace Holden, Hollice Holden (deceased at birth), William Holden and Clifton Edward Holden; two sisters, Lavern McNatt and Jean McNatt; all her sisters-in-law; and all her brothers-in-law; also a niece, Donna Schroeder Iverson; and nephew, Terry Votroubek; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Al and Becky would like to thank all the physicians, nurses and staff of St. Luke's Magic Valley in caring for Gladys, especially Dr. DiMaggio, her private physician.
We would also like to thank Pastor Roger Sedlmayr for providing strength and compassion and bringing Al and Gladys' church to both of them, as well as singing songs of faith and comfort, Heather Huebscher, intern deaconess for Immanuel Lutheran Church, as well as the church members of Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. John's Lutheran Church.
We would also like to thank the staff of Wynwood/Brookdale Senior Living Facility of Twin Falls for providing loving, supportive and dignified care for the past 3½ years to both Al and Gladys.
We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to Auburn Crest Hospice, especially Kris (Al's primary caregiver) and Jennie (Al's case manager), for providing compassionate, loving care while Al has been on hospice care.
Although the days ahead may be difficult for those that loved Gladys and she will be sorely missed, we know Gladys loved life and all the many blessings she has had. In celebration of Gladys' life, it is suggested that memorials be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. John's Lutheran Church, or the charity of your choice.
Gladys' funeral will be conducted by Pastor Roger Sedlmayr at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 2055 Filer Ave. E. in Twin Falls, with a lunch to follow. Interment will be at the Buhl Cemetery afterward. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, at Farmer's Funeral Chapel in Buhl, Idaho.
Arrangements are under the direction of Farmer's Funeral Chapel.
