| 118406 | www.findagrave.com: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=21256500 Ruth Marie Grimme, known to most as Marie, was born on a claim near Milesville, South Dakota on Monday, July 1, 1912 to Carson and Matilda Janssen. She was baptized in the Congregational Church in Pierre some time later. In a post card sent from Ruth Marie's father, Carson, to relatives back in the Springfield area in April of 1914, Carson said, "Ruth Marie helped me pick up cobs the other day. I tell you she is smart for her age. She can talk about anything." In October, 1914, Marie's family moved to the Kingsburg community where they purchased a business, eventually including a cream station, grocery items, a pool room, and later a post office. In the Kingsburg community, Ruth Marie attended grade school and her father once said, "Marie went to school and at Christmas, Aunt Jessie made her a pretty red dress. She climbed up in the front right on the platform, said her piece, and marched down." Her early life was filled with school programs, road shows, merry-go-rounds, horse races and community dances. She attended high school in Springfield, graduated and enrolled in Southern Normal School. She taught in the vicinity of Kingsburg for three years where a local newspaper report stated, "She is numbered among the most efficient teachers and has made many friends in the vicinity of Kingsburg." During her teaching career, she married one of those friends in the school district in which she was teaching. She and Arthur Grimme were married on April 15, 1933 at the Congregational Church in Vermillion, South Dakota. Arthur once quipped that their wedding dinner at a local Vermillion café was "the poorest meal we have ever eaten." After three flat tires in their return to the homestead, "we got the milk pails, went to the barn and milked the cows." In their early married years, times were tough on the George Grimme farm northeast of Kingsburg. For the first few years of their married life, Ruth Marie continued to teach where she earned enough money to buy some home essentials. After their first child was born in 1934, Ruth Marie devoted all her efforts to a growing family and struggling farmstead. In 1937, Arthur and Ruth Marie borrowed money to purchase the farm. Together, the couple turned their farm into a good life, living there until 1979. All four of their children were born on that farm site. Ruth Marie devoted her time to raising those children, helping out in the farm chore work where she could and keeping a comfortable house. Her family will always remember the kitchen table full of cookies and raised doughnuts. Ruth Marie was active in the Methodist Church in Tyndall since their marriage in 1933. Following moving near Tyndall in 1979, she became active in the Elizabeth Chapter No. 54 OES and later became Worthy Matron. She was also an active member of the Jolly Neighbors Extension, Thursday Circle, Senior Citizens Center and the Good Samaritan Guild. After Arthur died, she continued to live in their Tyndall residency until 1998. Since then, she proudly called her home the Good Samaritan Home in Tyndall. It is there that she passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 13, 2007 at the age of 94 years, 11 months and 12 days. Surviving are her four children, Donna Bohlmann (friend Leroy Sorenson) of Tyndall; Duane (wife Carol) of Yankton; Mary Williams of Anaheim California; and Larry (wife Lois) of Belvidere, South Dakota. Also surviving are eleven grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren. Ruth Marie is also survived by a sister in Fort Pierre, South Dakota, Gladys (Mrs. Andy Jochim). Ruth Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Carson and Matilda Janssen; two brothers, James and John (Bud); an infant brother, Casper; two sisters, Nina and Rena; a brother-in-law, Joe Ganje; a sister-in-law, Velma Janssen and two sons-in-law, Leslie Bohlmann and Clifford Williams. | 118437 | www.findagrave.com: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=22804209 Although Christine Berndt's obituary says she was born in Ventura, North Dakota, Christine was actually born in Neu Danzig, Russia (now the Ukraine) on Aug 12, 1880. She died in Spanaway, Washington in Aug. 15, 1968. Her mother's family the Pudwill's originally came from Prussia and were some of the first German settlers to arrived in Alt Danzig in 1787 from West Prussia under the invitation of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. In 1762 Catherine the Great made a proclamation and promised to pay for travel and give ownership to fertile lands for anyone who would come to live and work in her southern Russian lands, plus she promise many advantages besides the land. They would also later settle Neu Danzig which was a sister colony to Alt Danzig. After the death of Catherine the Great in 1796, The Russian Empire began to change and revoke many of the promises made by Catherine the Great. In 1870 the United States proposed the Homestead Act and many of the former German's who had immigrated to Russia came to America. Christine came to America aboard the SS Columbia in Oct 1889, with her widowed Mother Anna Maria Pudwill-Berndt and her brother Jacob Berndt. There were also Pudwill Aunts, Uncles and her Grandparents Michael Pudwill & Dorothea Engel Pudwill aboard. They all arrived in New York and headed for McIntosh County, North Dakota where they already had family living. Not much is known about her father, John Jakob Berndt, Christine said he was from Prussia, and loved her Mother and the children very much. Christine's mother's obituary says she was a widow when she came to America. Christine's mother Anna Maria remarried on Jul 16, 1891 in Mcintosh, North Dakota to Peter Green and together added 3 more siblings to her Christine's family. Katie, Lydia and Peter Green Jr. Christine was about 11 and Jacob about 8 when their mother remarried. In 1899 Christine married a Dutch descendent Charles Oliver Schermerhorn-Sherman in Ventura, North Dakota and together they had 11 children, one son, Joseph died shortly after birth. Christine and Charles lived mostly in Campbell County, area of South Dakota for much of the children's young lives. But in 1930 Charles with two of his son's Elmer and Clarence went to Idaho to find work and later sent for the rest of his family and even the children who where married followed their parents west. Soon after they arrived Christine and Charles bought a house in Toledo, Oregon. Her husband Charles died in 1943 and her eldest son Charles Edward Sherman stayed with her until 1952 when she and her son moved to Spanaway, Washington to lived with her daughter Elizabeth Mae Sherman Westover. Christine was a wonderful, loving and happy person. She never learned to speak much English, and spoke mostly in what is known as Flat German. She loved to sew, and make quilts. She was a good Christian and loved her children. At the time of her death she had 38 Grandchildren, 108 Great Grand Children and 11 Great Great Grandchildren. | Berndt, Christine (I136452)

Gaston, who settled in Boone County as early as 1846, died at his home near Madrid. Mrs. Gaston, it will be remembered, preceded him to the other world but a few months ago. Both belonged to a period which only the oldest settlers recall. In his pioneer life Mr. Gaston was noted for his bravery, but beneath a rugged exterior many found one of the kindest hearts. He was universally liked and respected. He was stepfather of Mrs. L. Zimbelman of this place. The funeral occurred on Sunday in Madrid. | Gaston, Charles W. (I106155)

| 118440 | www.findagrave.com: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=23133950 Boone Co Republican 24 Nov 1875 The suspense attending the disappearance of the unfortunate old Mr. Carmichael was relieved last Saturday, when the body of the wanderer was found near Ridgeport, on the land adjoining the poor farm. He had wandered over six miles from home, and the supposition is that he died from exposure the first night. He was found by a boy lying in a slough, dead, and word was immediately sent to his friends and the body taken home.' The circumstances surrounding the case are sad. The old man was over seventy years of age, being as helpless as a child. The worst was feared when he wandered off a week ago last Sunday, but Friday the news came that he had been found at the house of a Swede in the northern part of this township, and a team was sent out to bring him home. Upon arriving where he was supposed to be it was found that another man had been mistaken for him, and the old gentleman was still missing. His aged wife, relying on the rumor that he was found alive and well, prepared the house for his reception, when the news came that he was found lifeless, and the joy of the household was turned to mourning. The funeral took place last Sunday morning. Mr. Carmichael was a member of the masonic fraternity. Mrs. H.C. Shurter and Mrs. L. Zimbelman are daughters of his. The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction. Boone Count Democrat 1875 | Carmichael, Henry C. (I106153)
