He was 94. No service is planned. He was born May 1, 1916, in Mitchell to Elmer and Nora Reams Sasser. He married Bernice Brandner Creek on Nov. 12, 19148, in Eugene. He earned a bachelor's degree. He served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for the Oregon Department of Forestry. Survivors include two grandchildren. His wife and a stepson, Vern Brandner, died previously. Arrangements by Driskill Memorial Chapel in John Day. Remembrances to the Grant County Food Bank or the Alzheimer's Foundation. Arthur Harold Sasser, 94, of John Day, died Nov. 27, 2010, at Blue Mountain Hospital. Mr. Sasser was born May 1, 1916, in Mitchell, to Elmer and Nora (Reams) Sasser. Following graduation from Canyon City High School in 1935, he went on to Oregon State College in Corvallis (now Oregon State University) where he graduated in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy and served as a lieutenant from April 1942 to February 1946. He was a mine sweeper during World War II, an executive officer on his first ship and the commanding officer on his second ship. On Nov. 12, 1948, he married Bernice (Creek) Brandner in Eugene. He worked in farm forestry for the Oregon State Forestry Department until he retired in 1980. He enjoyed woodworking and his yard. He loved listening to music and learned to play the organ at age 64. He was also a great storyteller, with tales from his life experiences. He rode his baby-blue Schwinn Suburban bike over 25,000 miles, which is more than the circumference around the earth's equator. He was a member of the Eugene Senior Center, a charter member of the First Baptist Church of John Day, and a member of toastmasters. Survivors include his nieces, Sandra (Tom) Sutton of John Day and Janet (Phil) Phelps of Washougal, Wash.; great-nieces, Brenda Sutton of Redmond and Barbara McComb of Fresno, Calif.; great-nephew, Kevin Vernier of Portland; great-great-nieces, Tara Arnett of Salem and Faythe McComb of Fresno; great-great-nephew, Max McComb of Fresno; and stepgrandchildren, Jeanette and Adriana Brandner of Eugene. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Roba, and stepson, Vern Brandner. Memorial contributions may be made to the Grant County Food Bank or Alzheimer's research through Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845. Central Ave., Ladd died at 1:35 p.m. Feb. 2, 1998, in St. Margaret's Hospital, Spring Valley, where he was a patient for three weeks. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Hurst Funeral Home, Ladd, with the Rev. Janet Sills of the Ladd Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will be in Valley Memorial Park, Spring Valley. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. He was born Feb. 15, 1917, in Ladd, to Gustav and Katherine (Leyes) Pinter. He married Lena Bartoluzzi May 24, 1941. He retired from the Bureau Service Co. in Princeton in 1983. He also had worked as a blacksmith in his younger days. He was a member and had been a deacon of the Ladd Presbyterian Church. He had served two terms as an alderman in Ladd and was a member of the Ladd Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Lena; three sons, Lester (Susan) Pinter of Biloxi, Miss., Gary (Beth) Pinter of Spring Valley; and Alan (Karleen) Pinter of Spring Valley; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. D. on March 17, 1922. Carl Joseph Alger was born Febr. 22, 1857 in Leer, Ostfriesland, Germany, graduating from the University of Berlin with the degrees of Ph. D. and M. A. and two years of surgery and medicine. He left the army as a first lieutenant of calvary and came to the United States when 29 years of age. He contracted tuberculosis and spent a great many years in the mountains, overcame the disease, and finished his course in medicine and surgery in the University of Colorado at Boulder in June, 1893. On Sept. 2, 1893, Dr. Alger was united in marriage to Jessie Gertrude Litsey in Denver, and to this union were born three children, Clements, Lois and Carl. He also leaves two grandchildren, Christine Marie and Leonard Warren Alger; two sisters in Germany and one in Florida. After practicing medicine for a time in Denver, Dr. Alger then settled in Nebraska, practicing in Columbus, Leigh, Howells and Pilger. He quit the practice of medicine March 1, 1921, and moved to the homestead in Tripp county, South Dakota, where he spent the few remaining days of his life. He caught a bad cold and took to his bed in January, from which he never rose. Complications set in and finally the resistance of the weakened system gave way and he died in Winner, S.D. at 3:45 Friday afternoon, March 17, 1922. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. Myrna was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Sally Fisher. Myrna is survived by her sons, Rocky Cooper and Kevin Cooper and wife, Lauren, all of Oberlin; brothers, Roger and wife, Cindy Fisher of Jamestown, North Dakota, Rollie and wife, Michelle Fisher of Aurora, Colorado, and Rod and wife Jan Fisher of Tulsa, Oklahoma; sisters, Sandy and husband, Charles Moore of Topeka, Kansas; four grandchildren; and two grandchildren. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Whittier College with a double major in home economics and elementary education. Third grade was her favorite. She married David F. Bowersox in Pasadena California, and moved to Los Alamos, New Mexico where she then became a homemaker, raising four children. She enjoyed family outings, square dancing, jazzercise, cooking and traveling. She volunteered for the hospital auxiliary. She had a bed and breakfast "Jemez View" in their home for several years. She and Dave moved to Bellingham in 1999 and then to Lynden to be close to family. Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Vesta Haynes and older sister, Beverly Cady. She is survived by her husband, David; son, James (Judy) Bowersox; son Donald (Melodie) Bowersox and their children Justin, Troy, Anthony and Shayne; son, Michael Bowersox; and daughter, Mary (Tim) Pitcher and their children Alyssa and Ryan. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 18, 11 AM at Lynden United Methodist Church, 500 14th Street in Lynden. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1965, serving 21 months in Formosa. He was an airplane mechanic with TWA in San Francisco, and was employed for many years by Telecom Systems. He was presently employed at County Coach in Junction City. He was a licenced amateur radio operator, and a member of the American Production and Inventory Controls Society. He is survived by 2 children, both of Eugene; his mother, Bernice Sasser, and his father, Arthur Brandner, and his step-father, Harold Sasser, all of Eugene. He was preceded in death by a sister, Velma Mae Brandner. Memorial services will be held Friday, August 21st, at 2 p.m. in the Irving Christian Church, Rev. Richard Crane officiating. Visitation will be 2-6 p.m. today at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the church, Alzheimer's Association, or the donor's choice. Lorraine was born May 2, 1922, in rural Platte County to Gerhard and Anna (Deken) Fittje. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church north of Columbus and was educated at St. John's Lutheran School. She married Julius Gehring in 1947 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Omaha. Lorraine and Julius farmed until 1979, when they moved to a home near Columbus. Lorraine enjoyed gardening, preserving fruits and vegetables, singing in the church choir and socializing with friends in the Ladies Aid and Upper 10 Extension Club. Lorraine is survived by: Husband - Julius Gehring, of Columbus; son - Darold (Diane) Gehring, of Platte Center; daughter - Janet (Martin) Wiesehan, of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren - Kimberly Gehring, of Norfolk, Andrew Gehring, of Platte Center, Matthew Wiesehan, of Peoria, Ill., and Nathan Wiesehan, of Peoria, Ill.; sisters-in-law - Elsie Fittje, of Columbus, and Lillian Fittje, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
