Leonard Alvin Hieb, 92, passed away peacefully January 18, 2011 at his home in Yuma, Arizona. His loving wife, Lillian, daughter, Penny, and son-in-law, John, were by his side.
Leonard was born in Hague, ND on November 2, 1918, to August and Anna Maria Hieb. He was one of 11 children. He moved to Idaho when he was 18 to work in farming. There he met his wife, Lillian Lenora Fetzer. They were married on February 27, 1944 and have been married for 67 years.
He farmed in Idaho for many years. Leonard enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He always loved to be outside enjoying the fresh air. After retiring from farming in 1973, he and Lillian moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he was a developer and builder.
Leonard worked hard and he played hard. All of his life he loved being in the outdoors; fishing, hunting, camping, and boating. Fishing was a passion and he did it as much as he could. His daughters and their families were often all together on these adventures and have fond memories of fishing and camping in the Sawtooths, ocean-fishing trips to Canada, and crabbing on the Oregon coast.
He loved traveling with Lillian in their motor home and he could sit patiently for hours in his boat just waiting for "that big lunker" to bite.
Music was another great passion for Leonard. He was a talented musician and was always playing a polka or a waltz on the piano or accordion – he'd throw in a harmonica or drum for good measure and sometimes play them all at the same time! He played music with his brother and sisters and many others throughout his life and always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye when he was playing. He and Lillian traveled to many polka fests, often with their brothers and sisters, and enjoyed great music, food and dancing – and they sure could dance a mean polka!
When he finally retired for the second time in 1984, he and Lillian moved to Yuma, Arizona. Leonard was very active in his church where he was a Trustee and helped with many church building projects. He took great pride in his work and loved helping people.
Leonard was a hard-working, generous, talented, and proud man. His family was most important to him and he was blessed to be able to spend many enjoyable years with them.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian, of Yuma, AZ; daughters: Penny Hieb Turk (John), of Vista, CA, and Teena Hieb Wright, of Boise; grandson, Craig Hill (Stacey), of San Marcos, CA; granddaughter, Lexie Wright; great-granddaughters, Allison and Ava Hill; a brother, Arthur Hieb (Dorothy), of Rupert; and six sisters: Esther Knopp, of Las Vegas, NV, Martha Reichert (Emil), of Lodi, CA, Etta Baykara (Joe), of Las Vegas, NV, Hildegard Holy (Gene), of Rupert, Ella Wall (Bill), of Boise, and Betty Guthrie, of Las Vegas, NV.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Dorthea Fetzer; and his brothers: Ted and Clifford Hieb.
Just a few days before his death, he told his pastor, "life is good" and indeed, he lived a good life here on this earth. May he rest in peace and play many polkas in heaven.
A memorial service celebrating Leonard's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. January 28, 2011 at Victory Community Church in Yuma, AZ.
Leonard's hope was to have a new sign for his church in Yuma, so the family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to: Victory Community Church, P.O. Box 25270, Yuma, AZ 85365 Yuma, AZ.
