Elected as a Democrat to represent Pennsylvania's 8th District in the Thirty-Third Congress, he served from 1853 until his death in office. Muhlenberg was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, a scion of the Muhlenberg-Hiester family dynasty whose members would be involved in American politics for over 200 years. His father was US Congressman Henry Augustus Philip Muhlenberg; his grandfather, Joseph Hiester, was Governor of Pennsylvania. After graduating from Dickinson College in 1841, he was admitted to the bar (1844) and practiced law in Reading. In 1849 he was elected to the first of four terms in the State Senate, and that same year published a biography of another distinguished descendent, "The Life of General Peter Muhlenberg". As a state legislator he was opposed to slavery but willing to accept the Compromise of 1850 in order to preserve the Union. Muhlenberg was elected to succeed Thaddeus Stevens in the US House by a wide margin, but by then he was seriously ill with tuberculosis. On December 5, 1853 he attended the opening of the first session of Congress in Washington, DC; it was his only appearance with that body. He took to his bed and died little more than a month later. Muhlenberg was 30. His remains were returned to Reading for interment in the Charles Evans Cemetery, while a cenotaph exists for him at Washington's Congressional Cemetery. He attended school in Canby, MN, through the eleventh grade, when his family moved to Prescott, AZ. Upon moving to Arizona, Gene joined the Navy, serving in San Diego. After being Honorably Discharged from the Navy, Gene took a trip with a Naval buddy to Alpena, SD, where he met Bonnie Bennett. Gene married Bonnie on April 22, 1961, at the Methodist Parsonage in Huron. Gene worked for Van Dykes in the Building Division and Zales Jewelery, before working for almost 20 years at Shoenhard Ford. Gene loved golfing, yard work, bird watching, and giving his friends and family a hard time. He was a member of the Huron Elks Lodge 444 and Broadland Creek Golf Course. Gene is survived by his mother, Frieda Reeser of Prescott, AZ; son, Robert (Barbara) Reeser of Maize, KS; grandchildren, Dylan (Melissa Clyde) Reeser, Whitney (Austin Johnson) Reeser; step grandchildren, Ashley (Jai) Jefferies of Kona, HI, Sarah Jorgensen of Wichita, KS; 3 great grandchildren, Rylee Reeser, Dominik Johnson, Ian Johnson; brothers Mike Reeser of Olathe, KS, Steve (Theresa) Reeser of Prescott, AZ; sister, Kathy Petersen of Denver, CO; many nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his father; his wife, Bonnie on June 25, 2010; and step grandson, Cory Weisser. His memorial service will be 11:00 am Monday, March 28, 2011 at First Presbyterian Church in Huron with a private family inurnment prior to the service including Military Rites by the Huron Veterans Council. After she graduated she returned to South Dakota, working first in Sioux Falls for Western Electric, and later in Wessington Springs for the ASCS office. Bonnie married Gene Reeser on April 22, 1961, at the Methodist Parsonage in Huron. She worked as a bookkeeper for several businesses in the Huron area, including the Plains and James River Equipment, where she retired. Bonnie enjoyed walking, golfing, painting, crocheting, and especially spending winters in Arizona. Bonnie is survived by; her husband of 49 years, Gene; one son, Robert (Barbara) Reeser of Maize, KS; grandchildren, Dylan (Melissa Clyde) Reeser, Whitney (Austin Johnson) Reeser; step grandchildren, Ashley (Jai) Jefferies of Kona, HI, Sarah Jorgensen of Wichita, KS; brothers, Donald (Ruth) Bennett of Huron, David (Donna) Bennett of Huron, Gordon (Velma) Bennett of Austin, TX; sisters, Charlotte Freese of Clebur, TX, and Eileen (Kenneth) Hill of Hickory, NC; many nieces and nephews. Bonnie was preceded in death by; her parents; brother, Eugene Bennett; nephew, Norman Bennett; and step grandson, Cory Weisser. She came to this country in 1894 and resided on a farm near Sutton with her parents. She was married to Peter Ackerman on April 1, 1897, at Sutton. To this union were born nine children. Her husband and three daughters, Rose, Frieda, and Louise, preceded her in death. Mrs. Ackerman passed away after a short illness on November 6, 1963 at the Sunset Rest Home at Sutton. She attained the age of 90 years and 23 days. She leaves to mourn the following children: Theodore, Herman and Edward of Sutton; Henry of Lodi, California; Mrs. Ruben Sell of Sutton and Mrs. Edmund Ulmer of Grafton. There are also 19 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren; and three brothers; George, Henry, and Jacob Kitzmann, all of Loveland, Colorado. She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Saturday in the Hope Reformed Church of Sutton, the Rev. Peter Grossmann officiating. Mrs. Victor Griess was at the organ and Mrs. Erna M. Griess. Kenneth Kauk and Rev. and Mrs. Peter Grossmann sang "Rock of Ages," and Rev. Grossmann and Mr. Kauk sang "Wo Findet Die Seele Die Heimath Die Ruh." Pallbearers were Lawrence Ulmer, Norman Ackerman, Darwin Ackerman, LaVern Sell, Jerald Ackerman, and Melvin Ackerman. We choose 1758 since the court filing was in March 1759. He was likely born around 1719-5 but there is no proven birth date. His father was probably married by 1720. Overholser, stock farmer and general agriculturist, on Section 9, Genesee Township, was born June 20, 1846 in Stark Co., Ohio. His parents, John and Julia A. (Weimer) Overholser, removed from there in 1858 settling in Coleta. A personal account of them appears in another part of this work. They had 11 children. Mr. Overholser of this sketch is the 3rd son and fifth child. When he was 12 the family, consisting of the parents and eight children, removed to Coleta, and he was educated primarily in the common schools of the township of Genesee. At the age of 20 years he entered the seminary at Mt. Morris, Ogle Co. Ill., where he studied two years and in the winter of 1866—7, he taught a term of school near Polo, Ill. He went to Western Iowa in the spring following, and, associated with his brother, Joseph, he embarked in a mercantile enterprise. Their relationship existed about 18 months and was disolved by mutual consent. Mr. Overholser was married Oct. 3, 1869, in Johnson Co., Iowa, to Elizabeth A. Bowersox and they have become the parents of seven children, whose record is as follows: Waldo A. was born July 9, 1870; James Elery, Nov. 5, 1871; Maggie B. Dec. 20, 1873; John D. Nov. 4, 1875; Julia S., June 9, 1877; Ralph E., May 3, 1881; Frederick R., Oct.25 1882. Mrs. Overholser was born Nov. 11, 1848, in Augusta, Va., and is the daughter of James E. and Mary M. (Shuey) Bowersox. They were of German ancestry and descent and born and were born respectively in Maryland and Virginia. The former was a minister in the United Brethren Church. They were married in Virginia, and in 1854 went with their family of four children to Iowa, settling in Johnson County. Mrs. Overholser was educated in Linn and Johnson Counties, completing her studies at Western College in the former. She afterwards taught school. Her father died in the fall of 1880 her mother is still living. Mr. and Mrs. Overholser came to Illinois after their marriage, and located on 132 acres of land situated on section 9, of which they became the owners by purchase a year later. The place at that time was partially improved, and it now contains 215 acres, all of which is under tillage. The place is well stocked. Mrs. Overholser had been a resident of Coleta for about 60 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, he passing away two years ago last August. Four children are left to mourn the passing of their mother. They are Ralph and Fred Overholser, Mrs. P. A. McCray, all of Coleta, and Mrs. Harlow Drury of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Four brothers and two sisters also survive — William, Clay, Markwood and James Bowersox, Mrs. Laura Fordice, Miss Jennie Bowersox, all of Shueyville, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at the Liberal U. B. church at 10:30 o'clock Friday [01/04/1929] morning, conducted by Rev. S. E. Blimline, Burial will be in the Bethel cemetery near Milledgeville (Carroll Co). Obituary: Mrs. Elizabeth Bowersox Overholser was born in Augusta county, near Staunton, Virginia, on the eleventh day of November, 1848, and departed for her heavenly home on the second day of January, 1929, at 4:15 o'clock in the morning. She was of staunch German extraction, her father being James Bowersox, a minister in the United Brethren church, and her mother Margaret Shuey. When Mrs. Overholser was five years of age a group of thirty, which included her family, under the direction of her grandfather, Jacob Shuey, started for Iowa where their future home was to be established. Theodore F. Shuey, in a recent letter to Mrs. Overholser, makes the following observation about the beginning of this pioneer trip: "Your grandfather's first night on the road was spent at what is still known as Grassy Place. His old friends and neighbors accompanied him that far, and a great part of the night was spent in singing and prayer." Seven weeks were required to make the trip. Mrs. Overholser was fond of referring to the fact that during the entire trip the company never traveled on Sunday but set apart the day for worship. This group on reaching Iowa settled near Cedar Rapids, founding the town of Shueyville. Here Mrs. Overholser spent sixteen years, sharing with the other members of the family the hardships and privations of pioneer life. Her education was secured in the public school of Shueyville and in Western college. On October 3, 1869, she was married to David C. Overholser, who was conducting a store at Western, Iowa. Immediately they came to Coleta, and settled on the Overholser farm one mile west of town, Here they lived for seventeen years, during which time their seven children were born. During the succeeding nineteen years the Overholser family lived on the old homestead, and here they remained until they retired from the farm in 1905. For the past 23 years the Overholser home has been in the town of Coleta. To Mr. and Mrs. Overholser were born seven children: Waldo A., who died in 1921; Elery, who died in 1890; Mrs. Margaret McCray, of Rolfe, Iowa; John D., who died in 1911; Mrs. Julie Drury, of Ponce, Porto Rico [sic]; Ralph E. and Fred R., of Coleta. Mr. Overholser died August 1, 1926, and since that time Mrs. Overholser was anticipating with joy the time when they would be reunited and the happy relations that always existed between them would be renewed. Mrs. Overholser is survived by four brothers and two sisters, who reside in Shueyville, Iowa, two daughters and two sons, twelve grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. In early childhood Mrs. Overholser became a member of the United Brethren church and has always been a devoted and consistent Christian. She was intensely religious and was deeply interested in all that is related to the Kingdom of God. While deeply loyal to her church, she was not sectarian. She was always ready to make sacrifices for the Kingdom's sake. To missionary interests she gave freely of her time and means, withholding nothing. Her greatest contribution was a daughter. Her home was one of ideal beauty and serenity. She was a real homemaker. Her own beauty of character permeated the home. The memories of home constitute for her children the richest blessing. No unkind or censorious word ever fell from her lips. She lived the Christ life at home and in the community. The heritage that she has left us is priceless. (Funeral Notice) - Funeral services for Mrs. Elizabeth Overholser were held Friday [01/04/1929] afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at the Liberal U. B. church, conducted by Rev. F. E. Blimline, pastor of the church. Rev. O. E. foster, a former pastor of the church here, now stationed at Rockford, was expected here to assist in the services, but he had a break down at Freeport and was unable to get here in time for the funeral. A large crowd was present to pay their last respects to one whom they loved as a friend and neighbor, familiarly known as "Aunt Lizzie." Her life stands out as a true example in the profession of Jesus Christ and she was always found in the service of her Master, when health and opportunity permitted. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. Misses Lettie Garwick and Irene Boughman sang appropriate selections, assisted by Mrs. A. H. Maxwell at the piano. The following friends of the deceased acted as pall bearers: L. V. Reecher, J. M. Winkey, Miles Wallace, Herman Dusing, M. F. Frankfother, E. S. Colcord. Burial was in the family lot at the Bethel cemetery. Overholser was born at Coleta, Nov. 4, 1875 and died at his home in Milledgeville, Nov. 16, 1911 at the age of 36 years and 12 days. Dr. John as he was familiarly called spent his whole life in this community except for the time he was away at school. He received his early education in the Public Schools of Coleta, from there he went to the Leandor Clark college at Toledo, Iowa. Two years were spent in the Iowa University in the study of Medicine. He completed his medical course at the Rush Medical College, Chicago from which institution he graduated in 1901. After his graduation he located at Bradgate, Iowa. The next year he moved to Milledgeville, where for the last nine years he served the community faithfully as a physician, a loyal citizen and an ardent church worker. Dr. Overholser was converted at the age of 15 and joined the United Brethren church. When he came to Milledgeville he united with the Methodist church. As a christian he stood for the very highest type of Christian manhood. On Aug. 28, 1902 he married Elizabeth A. Garwick. To this union two children were born. There are left to mourn him, his wife Elizabeth, his children, J. Dwight and Elizabeth Gretchen, his father D.C. Overholser and mother Elizabeth A. of Coleta, two sisters, Mrs. McCray of Rolfe, Iowa and Mrs. Julia Drury of Puerto Rico and three brothers, Waldo A. of Sterling and Ralph and Fred of Coleta. One brother Elery died in 1890. His death is a personal loss to every one in the community and especially those to whom he administered as a physician. The services were at the M.E. church. The Masonic and Eastern Start orders of which he was a member were there in a body. Rev. Klackner, local Lutheran pastor read the 90th Psalm, Rev. Welch M.E. pastor of Coleta read the 15th, chapter 1st Cor. Rev. Kosht U.B. pastor, Coleta pronounced the invocation. Music by male quartet, Dr. Clyde Goldthorpe, C.E. Johnston, Walter Bell, Ray Freas. Chant "Passing Away" The Guiding Star' No Night in Heaven". Mrs. Merriam presided at the organ. Rev. Hewitt local M.E. pastor preached a very fitting sermon from Matthew 20-25 to 28. Burial in Bethel Cemetery. Pall Bearers were H.D. Bills, C.A. Straka, Arthur Muender, Howard Hendricks, M.F. She was a retired licensed practical nurse. In 1969 She married Bill Bruchie. She is survived by her husband, Bill Bruchie, of Belleville; a son, Norm Shinn, of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Wilber, of Belleville; a brother, Gerald Fraser, of McPherson, Kan.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
