Hochhalter:
The following text was provided by Ken Tschritter on March 1, 1998.
Art worked for Alvina and Gottfred Lindauer most of his life. After Gottfred died in 1957, Alvina sold the chicken ranch. She bought a house in Lodi. The house had a room in a detached garage. Art lived in the room. As you probably know Art was profoundly deaf. His speech very difficult to understand. The more time you spent around him the better you could understand his speech. As a kid he was kept out of school and required to work in the fields, consequently he never received the education that would have helped him speak and communicate more clearly. He would get very frustrated when he could not make himself understood.
The chicken ranch was hard work. They raised about 1500 laying chickens. In addition they raised chickens for fresh market. People would come to their place to buy fresh eggs and live chickens. The feeding was done by bucket twice a day. The eggs were hand gathered and graded. They kept a cow and farmed about 20 acres of grapes. It was a tough life with the same routine seven days a week.
Art could be very stubborn and times very juvenile. Alvina could handle him fairly well. After her death Art was on his own. He had a few dollars from Alvina's estate, however he did understand how to manage his finances. For example he would go the store and ask the clerks to make out his checks. He could not keep a checkbook. As he got older he needed a hip replacement. After the surgery he walked too soon and the new hip never healed properly. He was diagnosed with a form of leukemina, which ultimately lead to his death.
Of course, he never married nor did he have any children. He did spend a short time in a school for the deaf. My mother said that he had a lady friend at the school, however, when he left the school they lost touch. He never met anyone else.
