DEATH: Killed on the way from Worms. The S.S. Kaiser Wilhelm der Gross left Bremen for New York. The next day, Nov. 21, 1906, it collided with a British steamer. 14 killed on this ship (Michael Zimbelman was also killed). He came with wife, one son, one daughter, and two female relatives. After shipwreck, passengers that could continue their journey did so aboard the S.S. York. They were 7 miles from Cherbourg, France so the dead were taken there for burial and others were hospitalized in Cherbourg.
MILITARY SERVICE: Was one of the first Germans to volunteer for the Russian Army. He was in the Russian-Turkey of 1872 for 6 years, 8 months.

Michael, I got your name from a message board and would like help with my Wiest family if you can. According to family lore, Peter Wiest b. 1853 in Odessa, Russia came to this country in 1884 with his wife Elizabeth and daughter Pauline. They also traveled with a five-year-old who later became my grandfather. We believe the Wiest family listed in the 1900 census for Dickey County, North Dakota is the right family and may have found part of the children in the 1920 census in
Minnesota. I know these are vague clues, but let me know if you have anything that matches. We know that Peter had at least one sister. My grandfather, Paul Ernest Wiest, was born to an unwed teenage mother. Later when she wanted to marry the man would not accept the child and he moved to America with his Uncle Peter. We know she married name is Hoggler, Hoaglund, or something similar.

Peter met Adam Schopp [born 1862 - ???] and Christina Bechtold [born 1-2-1863 - ???] in Eureka, South Dakota, November [24], 1893 when they arrived from Russia; they had at least one child Adam Schopp born abt. 1892; he was 1 year and 9 months on Nov 24, 1893; she would be 15 or 16 when Paul Wiest was born!
I am trying to locate the records for Adam Schopp, who arrived in America in 1893, wife Christina Bechtold, born 1-2-1863 in Peterstal. Reply to Barbara Bolenbaugh tasmine@surewest.net
My great grandfather Adam Schopp (wife: Christine Bechtold) homesteaded in Velva, McHenry County, ND, in the late 1890's and my grandfather Edward Schopp took it over around 1925 is there anything in the book about them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
