Edna A. Steinwandt Bertsch was born June 3, 1923 near Long Lake, McPherson County, South Dakota to William and Emma (Zimmerman) Steinwandt. This is where she grew up while attending Bergdorf Country School. She helped on the family farm. She was united in marriage to Albert Bertsch on November 4, 1944 in Jewell Baptist Church southeast of Ashley, North Dakota. They made their home on a rented farm northwest of Long Lake for four years. In 1949 they moved into Ashley where he continued to farm from town. In 1954 they purchased a farm about ten miles south of Ashley, just immediately south of the state border in South Dakota. They were general farmers raising small grains and cattle. Albert died in 1976 and in the fall Edna sold the farm and moved into Ashley. In the late 1970's she started working at Ashley Super Valu as a baker. She baked there for over 25 years. In May of 2011 she entered nursing care. Edna enjoyed embroidery as a pastime. She was very interested in politics and liked to play the accordion and organ. She was a self taught musician. Visiting and spending time with family and friends was always enjoyable. Edna was a member of Ashley Baptist Church. Edna is survived by one brother, Wilbert (Norma) Steinwandt of Rapid City, South Dakota and one sister, Eunice (Alvin) Neuharth of Bismarck, North Dakota. Her parents and husband preceded her in death.
