Nathaniel, son of John and Barbara Berney, was born March 15, 1893 in Greeley county, Nebr. He grew to manhood there and was united in marriage to Edna L. Bandt on June 21, 1915. To this union was born nine children.
They homesteaded in Wolbach, Neb and then in Kimball. In 1920 they came to Phillips county and farmed northeast of Phillipsburg.
Soon after, he started working for the Rock Island Railroad until his retirement in 1933 due to a disability which left him an invalid until his death. Since his wife's death in 1956 he has made his home at Borum's Gentle Care.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John; one sister, Barbara, and his wife, Edna.

Those who are left to mourn are Amel J. Berney of Fresno, Calif., Lloyd Berney of Wichita, Kans, Barbara Bach of Wheatland, Wyo., Virgil Berney of Washington, Kan, Mary Berney Jones of Edmond, Kans., LaVerne Berney Foiles of Orange, Calif., Larry Berney of the U. S. Navy, Nathaniel Berney, Jr., and Clarence Berney of Phillipsburg; 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Wednesday June 5 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon in the Miles Chapel, with the Rev. Harold E. Nelson officiating. Mrs. Mark Herman, Mrs. Frank Hahn and Miss Linava Hahn sang the hymns accompanied by Miss Anita Radloff.
Pallbearers were: George Ewing, Rev. Munvon, John Schermerhorn, Jess Bovce, Charles Faubion, and Wilbur Faubion. Interment was in the Fairview cemetery.
