Bernice was born on June 29, 1931, in Hebron, ND, to John and Lydia (Mutschelknaus) Staiger. She was raised and attended school in the Hebron area. On March 4, 1948, she married Benjamin Wetzel in Hebron. They made their home on the farm east of Glen Ullin where they worked side-by-side for many years. In 1979 they moved to Bismarck. Ben passed away on March 19, 1992. She then married Edward Grosz on December 9, 1995. Bernice worked for Laurie’s Fashion Apparel Store for many years. She belonged to the New Salem Homemakers Club, Prime Times, and Missouri Valley and Capital Quilters Guilds. She was also a pianist and organist at the church. Bernice loved to sew and crochet, and made many quilts which she gave to family and friends. Bernice is survived by three daughters, Beverly (Kelvin) Gietzen of Glen Ullin, RoseMary (Kevin) Hertz of Bismarck, and Diane Wetzel of Bismarck; one son, Dean (Vovi) Wetzel of Bismarck; one step-daughter, Mona (Ken) Butters of West Des Moines, IA; one step-son, Donald (Martha) Coats of Atlanta, TX; nine grandchildren, Michael (Nicolette) Gietzen of Bismarck, Don (Geri) Gietzen of Bismarck, Wendy (Andy) Boehm of Mandan, Becky Gietzen of Bismarck, Darren (Kim) Hertz of Bismarck, Derrick (Ashley) Hertz of Bismarck, Brett Wetzel of Mandan, Jake Wetzel of Bismarck, and Sadie Wetzel of Mesa, AZ; two step-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Jamee Fetch of Bismarck; thirteen great-grandchildren, Lauren, Morgan, and Dylan Gietzen, Brett (Kimberly) Gietzen and Shae Gietzen, ShiAnne and Kendra Boehm, KoLee, Ambrielle, Liliana, Landon, and Hope Hertz, and Tejah Fetch; one great-great-grandchild, Ryker Wallace; one sister, Olivia Huber of Bismarck; three sisters-in-law, Betty Staiger of Mandan, Alice Wetzel of Glen Ullin, and Minnie Wegerle of Wichita, KS; a special young boy, Jordan Grosz of Bismarck; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lydia Staiger; her husbands, Benjamin Wetzel and Edward Grosz; one son, Bruce; one brother, Ruben; one sister-in-law, Tina Staiger; and one brother-in-law, Robert “Bob” Huber.
