Merrill Morris Willett was born in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho to Lemmie Lee and Mary Audrey (Gordon) Willett on January 8, 1915. He was baptized and confirmed March 4, 1949, at Trinity Lutheran church in Corona. He entered eternal rest on March 24, 2006, in Mesa, Ariz., at the age of 91. At the time of his death he was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Spearfish, and Eternal Life Lutheran Church Mesa, Ariz. Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 15, 2006, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spearfish, with Pastor Gene Bauman officiating.
He attended grade school in Corona, graduated from University High in Vermillion, and attended two years of college at the University of South Dakota. While in college he was involved in the ROTC program.
He married Ethel Thelma Remund April 17, 1938, in Wilmot. To this union two children were born, and the couple also raised a foster son.
The family made their home 11 miles north of Milbank in Geneseo Township, Roberts County, where Merrill farmed for 38 years before retiring to winter in Mesa, Ariz.
His favorite pastimes during his retirement were watching one sports event on television while listening to another on the radio. He was an avid card player, and had a sweet tooth and was well known for his candy treats.
Mr. Willett was known for his generosity and willingness, without reward, to lend a hand whenever one was needed, for neighbor, family or friend.
Merrill was a friendly sort and would visit with anyone, any chance he got. He enjoyed the sports of basketball, baseball, football and snowmobiling with his family and friends and was the organizer of the Alpine Snowmobile Club in Wilmot.
Merrill was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Ethel; brother and sister-in-law, Merwyn and Helen Willett; and brother-in-law Lester Herried.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Spearfish;children, Marilyn (Ron) Ruediger, of Spearfish, Jerry (Ann) Willett, of Watertown, David (Della) Hansvold, of Wilmot, Jerelyn (Ralph) Riemer, of Spearfish, James (Millie) Burroughs, of Austin, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his sister, Irma Herried, of Vermillion.
Interment will be in the Milbank Cemetery on April 18, 2006, at 9:30 a.m., with Pastor James L. Wiese officiating. There will be a fellowship following at Emanuel Lutheran church.
