Å“Prominent Early Citizen of San Jose Succumbs to Lingering Illness.
Å“Mrs. Emma Burwell Eaton, prominent pioneer citizen of San Jose and wife of the late Amasa Eaton, died yesterday noon at her residence, 530 North First Street, after a lingering illness of many months.
Å“Mrs. Eaton, as was her husband, was widely known and respected throughout the community. The power and sweetness of her personality made itself felt in many of th early activities of San Jose and th good work which she accomplished for charity and church (she was a member of Trinity Episcopal church) will long be remembered.
œAlthough Mrs. Eaton belonged to the fine œold school of gentlewomen, whose interests lay for the most part in the home and the family, she never failed to assist in any way within her power to help the community a a whole.
Å“She was born in Ohio 72 years ago and moved to this city when San Jose was but a promise of what it has since become. The Eaton residence, built more than 30 years ago, ha served as one of San Joseâ„¢s landmarks since that time, and under its hospitable roof many distinguished guests have been entertained.
Å“Mr. Eaton was at one time a director of the Bank of San Jose, and was known throughout the community as a prominent caitalist and real estate dealer.
Mrs. Eaton was attended in her last illness (chronic heart disease of many yearsâ„¢ standing) by Dr. J. Underwood Hall. She is survived by a daughter, C. Belle, and two sons, Alfred C. and Clarence B. Eaton.
Å“Friends are invited to attend the funeral tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30 oâ„¢clock from the residence, 530 North First Street.Â
