The Councillor and ancestor of President Harrison. Resided in 'Hesse,' Gloucester Co., VA. There is a tradition the family came originally from Hesse-Darmstadt. Some of the name had, however, settled first in England before emigrating to America. The seat of the elder line in Virginia was called 'Hesse.' Ancestor of President Wm. Henry Harrison. In 1680 he was Lieut.-Col. of Horse of Gloucester Co., and one of the Justices; 18th Oct 1688, he was sworn one of the Council. John was the heir of his elder brother William, who died childless.
