Sister of wealthy planter Major Lewis Burwell, Elizabeth married Robert Vaulx, a leading merchant in London and one of four brothers who immigrated to Virginia. They became merchants dealing in trade between the colony and mother country, as well as with Holland. elizabeth and Robert Vaualx lived on a 500 hundred acre York County plantation complete with its own warehouses. Robert frequently traveled from Virginia to England to manage hs business, and in his absence, Elizabeth managed some of the Virginia side of the familiy trading enterprise and managed substantial land holdings both in York County and Northern Virginia.
