HISTORY From Wishek, ND, Golden Jubilee, 1898-1948. George Schilling, Sr., was born January 18, 1880, in Gluekstahl, South Russia. His parents were Wm. Schilling and Carolina Schilling, nee Boschee. He married Kathrina Woehl at Ashley on November 22, 1903. Mrs. Schilling was born March 4, 1888. Her parents were Henry Woehl and Kathrina Woehl, nee Brenneise. Nine children were born to them. One died. The eight remaining children are George, Theodore, and Adam Schilling, Ida Meidinger of Venturia, Emma Kasemen, Martha Benkendorff, Rose Wolf, and Christine Ottmer of Wishek. Mr. Schilling entered this country on June 1, 1901, coming to this community in 1903. He settled 14 miles northwest of Venturia. He first saw Wishek on March 20, 1903. His first business transaction was to buy land from Karl Kessels, and a grass mower from John Doyle. Due to the fact that the Schillings were not of the very first pioneers, they were fortunate in not having to endure any of the severe hardships of pioneer life. The family lost only one child. Financially, they were also fortunate. Whenever possible they added to their land by purchasing a tract or more until they had a total of 8 quarters with two sets of buildings and other personal property to a fair extent. Sources: 1.
