Gottlieb and Elizabeth (Weiss) Patzer by Frances Good
Gottlieb Patzer was born December 25, 1849 in Seimany, Bessarabia, South Russia. His first wife passed away and he married Elizabeth (Weiss) Hoff on June 21, 1899. Elizabeth Weiss was born July 18, 1863 in Bagdorf, South Russia. Her first husband, Ludwig Hoff had died in 1896, leaving her with four children, two of whom died before the family immigrated to Canada. Gottlieb and Elizabeth Patzer moved from Harvey, North Dakota to Irvine in 1906 with Elizabeth's children, John and Christina Hoff, from her previous marriage to Ludwig Hoff, their own children, Mary, Samuel, Joseph and Elizabeth, and grown sons of Gottlieb's from his previous marriage. Gottlieb and family farmed and bought adjoining lands. Gottlieb took up a homestead on NE 18-11-2-W4. Here his sons helped him build a set of farm buildings and also built some houses in the town of Irvine. The boys also took up homesteads: Nathaniel David Patzer, SE 22-11-2-W4 in 1907, canceled 1908; Gotthielf Herman Patzer, SE 34-11-2-W4 in 1907; Gottlieb Patzer, NW 24-10-2-W4 in 1907, canceled 1908. The boys did not stay long in this area; they went back to the U.S.A. Gottlieb and Elizabeth farmed about four and a half miles south of Irvine. One son, Jacob, was born on the farm in 1908. The children went to Berry Centre School as much as they were able to. Elizabeth (Lizzie) walked to school at Irvine, but she didn't have much schooling because she had to help Barbara (Mrs. John Hoff) with her family. Gottlieb passed away on May 27, 1921. Elizabeth stayed on the farm until 1940 when Jack got married. Elizabeth then bought a house in Irvine where she lived until 1946, when she moved to the Haven of Rest in Medicine Hat, living there until her passing away on January 25, 1948. John Hoff, born July 17, 1888, married Barbara Weishaar, and died in 1964. (See Ludwig Hoff story). Christina Hoff, born about 1892, married Fred Bollinger in 1910. Mary, born June 17, 1900, married Earl Ligget (dec.). Samuel, born August 17, 1902 (dec.), married Kathleen Adel. Joseph, born March 28, 1903, married Adela Yanke. They lived at the homeplace for a short time then moved to Orion where they farmed until moving to Medicine Hat to retire. They now live in a senior citizens' home. Elizabeth, born July 1, 1905, married John Hausauer. (both deceased) Jacob, born April 8, 1908, married Emma Pahl
