Die Kolonie lag etwa 35 km im SO von Beresowka. Die 34 Gründerfamilien kamen aus Württemberg (27), Preußisch-Polen (5), aus der Schweiz (1) und aus Sachsen (1).
1822-31 kamen in die ursprünglich für 66 Höfe vorgesehene Kolonie weitere 30 Familien (8 aus Polen, 8 aus Baden und 14 aus Württemberg). Ihren Namen erhielt die Kolonie zu Ehren des Generals Johannes Insowo. 1833 wurde die Kolonie wegen permanenten Wassermangels um einen Werst nach Süden verlegt. Neben Ackerbau betrieben die Kolonisten auch Fischzucht. 1837 wurde ein größeres Schulgebäude errichtet. An der 4-klassigen Schule unterrichtete 1912 ein Lehrer 32 Schüler. Von 1861 bis 1885 bildeten Johannestal und Worms ein Kirchspiel. Danach kam noch Waterloo hinzu. Diesem Kirchspiel gehörten 20 Gemeinden mit 5.047 Eingepfarrten an. Die Kolonie gehörte zusammen mit den Kolonien Karsruhe, Katharinental, Landau, München, Rastatt, Rohrbach, Speyer, Sulz, Waterloo und Worms zum Beresaner Gebiet. Es liegt entlang des Steppenflusses Beresan, der aber nur im Unterlauf das ganze Jahr Wasser führt. Das Beresaner Tal ist sehr fruchtbar und daher dicht besiedelt. Die meisten deutschen Aussiedler, die hier 1809/1810 siedelten kamen aus den durch die Napoleonischen Kriege verheerten Rheinprovinzen. Die Kolonisten gelangten über Böhmen, Schlesien, Mähren und Galizien bis zur Grenzstation Radzwillo. Von dort ging es über Odessa ins eigentliche Siedlungsgebiet. Im Beresaner Tal wurden die katholischen Kolonien Speyer, Landau und Sulz, im Fuchstal, einem Seitental des Beresan, wurden die katholische Kolonie Karlsruhe gegründet. Im Tschitschekleja wurden Rastatt und München angesiedelt.
Die beiden evangelischen Kolonien Rohrbach und Worms wurden in einem Nebental des Tilgul gegründet. 1818 wurden noch die katholische Kolonie Katharinental im Fuchstal, die evangelische Kolonie Waterloo am Ursprung des Beresan und die evangelische Kolonie Johannestal am Sasik gegründet. Alle Kolonien gehörten ursprünglich zum Groß-Liebentaler Gebiet. Aber seit 1813 bildeten sie das Beresaner Siedlungsgebiet, dass eine Landfläche von 55.597 Desj. umfasste und seinen Verwaltungssitz in Landau hatte. Die Besiedlung des Gebietes (und nicht nur dieses) mit ausländischen Kolonisten wurde notwendig, nachdem alle Versuche gescheitert waren, das nach dem Friedensschluss vom 29.12.1791 zwischen Russland und der Türkei an Russland gefallene Land mit Einheimischen zu besiedeln.
