Aberdeen ist eine Stadt und Verwaltungssitz des Brown County im US-Bundesstaat South Dakota, etwa 201 km nordöstlich von Pierre. Die Stadt hatte bei der Volkszählung 2010 26.091 Einwohner und ist damit die drittgrößte Stadt des Bundesstaates. Aberdeen ist die Hauptstadt des Aberdeen Micropolitan Statistical Area, das alle Grafschaften Brown und Edmunds umfasst und im Jahr 2010 40.602 Einwohner hatte. Aberdeen ist die Heimat der Northern State University und des Presentation College.
Geschichte:
Bevor Aberdeen oder Brown County von europäischen Siedlern bewohnt wurde, wurde es von etwa 1700 bis 1879 von den Sioux-Indianern bewohnt. Das erste Auftreten von Kaukasiern erfolgte mit der Gründung von Pelzhandelsposten in den 1820er Jahren; Diese Handelsposten blieben bis Mitte der 1830er Jahre in Betrieb. Die ersten „Siedler“ dieser Region waren die Arikara-Indianer, aber später schlossen sich ihnen weitere an.
Die erste Gruppe euroamerikanischer Siedler, die das Gebiet des heutigen Brown County erreichte, bestand aus nur vier Personen, drei Pferden, zwei Maultieren, fünfzehn Rindern und zwei Wagen. Zu dieser Gruppe von Siedlern gesellte sich später im folgenden Frühjahr eine weitere Gruppe, und schließlich wanderten immer mehr Siedler in dieses allgemeine Gebiet ein, das derzeit Columbia, South Dakota, ist. Diese Stadt wurde am 15. Juni 1879 gegründet. Die Stadt wurde 1880 besiedelt und 1882 eingemeindet.
Aberdeen wurde, wie viele Städte im Mittleren Westen, um die sich neu entwickelnden Eisenbahnsysteme herum gebaut. Aberdeen wurde erstmals am 3. Januar 1881 von Charles Prior, dem Superintendenten des Minneapolis-Büros der Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad, oder kurz der Milwaukee Road, die von Alexander geleitet wurde, offiziell als Stadtgebiet geplant Mitchell. Mitchell, der Chef von Charles Prior, war für die Wahl der Städtenamen verantwortlich, wurde in Aberdeen, Schottland, geboren, nach dem die Stadt Aberdeen, South Dakota, benannt wurde. Aberdeen wurde offiziell am 6. Juli 1881 gegründet, dem Datum der ersten Ankunft eines Zuges der Milwaukee Railroad. Aberdeen operierte dann unter einem Stadtrecht, das im März 1883 von der Territorial Legislature gewährt wurde.
Als Aberdeen wuchs, wurden viele Geschäfte und Gebäude entlang der Main Street von Aberdeen errichtet. Dies wurde jedoch bald zu einem Problem aufgrund der regelmäßigen Überschwemmungen von Aberdeen, die dazu führten, dass es als "Die Stadt im Froschteich" bezeichnet wurde. Anfangs stellte dieser einzigartige Zustand für die neu errichteten Gebäude kein Problem dar, da es nicht sehr viel geregnet hatte, aber als starke Regenfälle fielen, tauchte der Teich wieder auf und überschwemmte die Keller jedes Gebäudes an der Main Street, was vielen Geschäftsinhabern und Hausbesitzern zu schaffen machte Aufruhr. Als diese Überschwemmung passierte, hatte die Stadt eine dampfbetriebene Pumpe, die verwendet werden musste, um das gesamte überflutete Gebiet zu trocknen, was Tage, wenn nicht Wochen dauern würde – und meistens hätte es erneut geregnet in dieser Zeit und verursachte noch mehr Überschwemmungen, auch in den bereits entleerten Kellern. Als das Wasser aus den Kellern verschwunden war, musste sich die Stadt immer noch mit dem Schlamm auseinandersetzen, der auch durch die starken Regenfälle entstanden war.
Die Stadt beschloss 1882, einen artesischen Graben zu bauen, um die Auswirkungen des "Frog Pond" zu kontrollieren. Der Plan wurde später verbessert und 1884 zu einem artesischen Brunnen ausgebaut, um die starken Regenfälle zu bekämpfen und die Keller vor Überschwemmungen zu schützen. Der artesische Brunnen wurde von den Stadtingenieuren entworfen, um Überschwemmungen zu verhindern und ein Wassersystem zu entwickeln. Während des Grabens des Brunnens war der unterirdisch gefundene Wasserstrom jedoch zu stark, um eingedämmt zu werden. Das Wasser kam mit gewaltiger Wucht herausgeschossen und hatte die gesamte Hauptstraße in bis zu vier Fuß Wasser getaucht. Die Ingenieure erkannten die früheren Mängel des artesischen Brunnenplans und fügten dem Brunnen bald einen Absperrschieber hinzu, um den Wasserfluss zu kontrollieren, wodurch Aberdeen seine erste funktionierende Wasserversorgung erhielt.
