Linton ist eine Stadt in und die Kreisstadt von Emmons County, North Dakota, USA. Die Bevölkerung war 1.097 bei der Volkszählung 2010. Im Vergleich zu den anderen 356 Städten in North Dakota liegt Linton gemessen an der Einwohnerzahl unter den besten zwölf Prozent. Die Stadt dient als Regierungs-, Handels- und Geschäftszentrum für Emmons County.

Eine nahe gelegene historische Stätte, die im National Register of Historic Places aufgeführt ist, ist der Sacred Heart Cemetery, eine schmiedeeiserne Kreuzstätte in oder in der Nähe von Linton.

Geschichte:

Im August 1898 wurde Land im geografischen Zentrum von Emmons County in Abschnitt 7 von Township 132 North, Range 76 West, des fünften Hauptmeridians, von W.E. Petrie in Grundstücke, Straßen und Gassen, um einen Sitzplatz für Emmons County zu schaffen. Der Standort wurde Linton genannt, nach George W. Lynn, der sich 1885 in Emmons County niedergelassen hatte. Er war Landwirt, Anwalt, Emmons Countys erster Staatsanwalt und für eine Weile Herausgeber der Emmons County Free Press. Das Plat wurde am 30. Dezember 1898 im Urkundenregister eingetragen. Linton wurde am 26. April 1906 als Dorf eingemeindet; Charles Patterson, Herausgeber des Republikaners von Emmons County, war Lintons erster Postmeister, nachdem er im März 1899 seinen Auftrag für den Posten erhalten hatte.

Linton erhielt seine erste Verbindung über Ferngespräche im Jahr 1905, als die Northwestern Telephone Exchange Company eine Verbindung von Fargo nach Bismark herstellte und eine Nebenstrecke nach Linton errichtete. Gleichzeitig wurde Bismark an die Leitung des South Dakota-Systems angeschlossen, sodass jede der Gemeinden auf diese Weise miteinander kommunizieren konnte.

Der Hollywood-Agent Bill Daly von Bill Daly Associates war unter anderem der Manager von Lawrence Welk und des leichten Boxweltmeisters Carlos Ortiz. Daly war der Neffe der Schwiegertochter Kathleen Hogue des Linton-Arztes Dr. Rolly Hogue.

Das Stone Hotel um 1913 war im Besitz von Dr. Rolly Hogue und wurde von ihm betrieben. Es galt als "das aufwendigste" der drei in der Stadt und verfügte daher über "die höchsten Preise". Dr. Hogue war auch der Besitzer der örtlichen Drogerie und der Arzt der Familie des Animateurs Lawrence Welk.

Die Gründung von Linton war das Ergebnis eines politischen Streits zwischen Bewohnern der nördlichen Hälfte des Emmons County und denen der südlichen Hälfte. Im Jahr 1885, zwei Jahre nach der offiziellen Gründung der Grafschaft, befand sich die Kreisstadt in der Stadt Williamsport, die sich in der nördlichen Hälfte der Grafschaft befand. Die Menschen in der südlichen Hälfte waren verärgert, weil die Kreisstadt so weit entfernt war und die meisten Kreisführer aus dem Norden kamen. Darüber hinaus war der nördliche Teil dichter besiedelt als der südliche Teil, so dass dies zu Problemen bei der Abstimmung führte, da die "Nordländer" aufgrund der höheren Bevölkerungszahlen einen größeren Einfluss auf die Themen hatten. Schließlich wurde beschlossen, eine Abstimmung abzuhalten, um festzustellen, ob die Einwohner die Aufteilung des Landkreises in zwei Teile befürworteten. Bei Erfolg würde die nördliche Hälfte weiterhin Emmons heißen - wobei Williamsport die Kreisstadt bleibt -, während die südliche Hälfte Winona heißen würde, wobei die Stadt Winona als neue Kreisstadt der Regierung fungieren würde. Als die Stimmen gezählt wurden, hatten sich die Einwohner gegen eine Aufteilung des Landkreises entschieden. Dies beendete den Streit jedoch nicht und die Bemühungen, den Regierungssitz von Williamsport nach Winona zu verlegen, wurden fortgesetzt. In den 1880er und 1890er Jahren wurden drei Stimmen abgegeben. Die ersten beiden scheiterten vollständig. Die dritte führte zu der Entscheidung, die Kreisstadt in die Mitte der Grafschaft zu verlegen und eine neue Stadt zu gründen, die schließlich zur Stadt Linton wurde. Die Menschen im Norden wollten jedoch weiterhin den Sitz in Williamsport behalten, deshalb zogen sie Anklagen vor, die behaupteten, die Wahl sei "betrügerisch und illegal", und erhielten eine gerichtliche Verfügung, um den Umzug zu verhindern. Die Südstaatler waren über diese Aktion so empört, dass sie im Januar 1899 nach Williamsport gingen, um die Aufzeichnungen des Landkreises in Besitz zu nehmen und sie in die neue Kreisstadt zu überführen. Die Männer waren bewaffnet, stießen auf keinen Widerstand und nahmen die Aufzeichnungen auf, darunter laut einem Bericht des damaligen Polizisten John Bartu einen Zwei-Tonnen-Safe (dieser Safe befindet sich jetzt in der Sammlung des Emmons County Museum in Linton). Gegen die Männer wurde keine Anklage erhoben, obwohl es den Williamsport-Interessen gelungen war, die Aufzeichnungen in ihre Stadt zurückzubringen und eine weitere Wahl anzuordnen, die die Zustimmung einer Mehrheit von zwei Dritteln der Wähler erfordern würde, damit Linton seine Position behält als Kreisstadt (diese Wahl wurde nie abgehalten). Obwohl die Aufzeichnungen nach Linton zurückgebracht wurden, zog sich der Fall mehrere Monate vor Gericht hin. Während dieser Zeit wurde erwartet, dass er vor dem Obersten Bundesgericht landen würde. Die Angelegenheit wurde endgültig geklärt, als E.S. Allen, der Anwalt der Bevölkerung von Williamsport, beantragte die Abweisung des Falls, wobei sich die Stadt Linton durchsetzte und der Sitz von Emmons County seitdem dort geblieben ist. Infolge des Verlusts seiner Position als Kreisstadt und weil die Northern Pacific Railway den Standort Linton bevorzugte, als sie um 1897 eine Niederlassung in der Gegend errichteten, hörte Williamsport in den frühen Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts auf, als Gemeinde zu existieren.

Die älteste Zeitung der Gemeinde, The Emmons County Record, wurde 1884 in Williamsport veröffentlicht, 1899 jedoch von Darwin R. Streeter, ihrem Gründer, nach Linton verlegt. Streeter war bis Januar 1914 Herausgeber der Zeitung und hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt die volle Kontrolle darüber ging in die Hände seines Sohnes Frank über. Die Zeitung wird seit ihrer Gründung kontinuierlich veröffentlicht.

Der Ort der Stadt, der Williamsport war, steht jetzt unter Wasser, weil ein Damm gebaut wurde.
