Anna Marie Pudwill was born in Kherson Nikolajew Neu-Danzig, Russia and her baptism records from the Russian Lutheran Church show she was born 13 Oct 1860 to Michael Pudwill and Dorothea Engel. Anna was married to John Jakob Berndt before she came to America from Russia in Oct 1889 on board the S/S Columbia. When Peter Green Sr. got older he became bedridden and Anna took care of him for 9 years. His grand-daughters said he was onery and would hit them with his cane if got close enough. I suppose being bedridden would make anyone onery.

Although Christine Berndt's obituary says she was born in Ventura, North Dakota, Christine was actually born in Neu Danzig, Russia (now the Ukraine) on Aug 12, 1880. She died in Spanaway, Washington in Aug. 15, 1968.
Her mother's family the Pudwill's originally came from Prussia and were some of the first German settlers to arrived in Alt Danzig in 1787 from West Prussia under the invitation of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia. In 1762 Catherine the Great made a proclamation and promised to pay for travel and give ownership to fertile lands for anyone who would come to live and work in her southern Russian lands, plus she promise many advantages besides the land. They would also later settle Neu Danzig which was a sister colony to Alt Danzig.
After the death of Catherine the Great in 1796, The Russian Empire began to change and revoke many of the promises made by Catherine the Great. In 1870 the United States proposed the Homestead Act and many of the former German's who had immigrated to Russia came to America.
Christine came to America aboard the SS Columbia in Oct 1889, with her widowed Mother Anna Maria Pudwill-Berndt and her brother Jacob Berndt. There were also Pudwill Aunts, Uncles and her Grandparents Michael Pudwill & Dorothea Engel Pudwill aboard. They all arrived in New York and headed for McIntosh County, North Dakota where they already had family living.
Not much is known about her father, John Jakob Berndt, Christine said he was from Prussia, and loved her Mother and the children very much. Christine's mother's obituary says she was a widow when she came to America.
Christine's mother Anna Maria remarried on Jul 16, 1891 in Mcintosh, North Dakota to Peter Green and together added 3 more siblings to her Christine's family. Katie, Lydia and Peter Green Jr. Christine was about 11 and Jacob about 8 when their mother remarried.
In 1899 Christine married a Dutch descendent Charles Oliver Schermerhorn-Sherman in Ventura, North Dakota and together they had 11 children, one son, Joseph died shortly after birth.
Christine and Charles lived mostly in Campbell County, area of South Dakota for much of the children's young lives. But in 1930 Charles with two of his son's Elmer and Clarence went to Idaho to find work and later sent for the rest of his family and even the children who where married followed their parents west.
Soon after they arrived Christine and Charles bought a house in Toledo, Oregon. Her husband Charles died in 1943 and her eldest son Charles Edward Sherman stayed with her until 1952 when she and her son moved to Spanaway, Washington to lived with her daughter Elizabeth Mae Sherman Westover.
Christine was a wonderful, loving and happy person. She never learned to speak much English, and spoke mostly in what is known as Flat German. She loved to sew, and make quilts. She was a good Christian and loved her children. At the time of her death she had 38 Grandchildren, 108 Great Grand Children and 11 Great Great Grandchildren.
