When her mother Eva died in 1913, Violet and her sister Hilda Berndt Fore went to live with their Grandmother, Anna Maria Pudwill-Berndt-Green and their Aunt Lydia. Lydia Green Larson and her husband Eric G Larson considered them their own children as Lydia was never able to have children of her own but adopted several.
Their father Jake Berndt died in 1923 when a car he was working on fell on him.
