    Born at Neudorf (Karamanove), Tiraspol, Cherson, Ukraine, Russia, son of Johannes Schlepp Sr. and Barbara Laemmle, married by Reverend Richard Fehlau on December 15, 1895, at Java, Walworth County, South Dakota, to Emilie Wolf.

    Funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, 1944, at 2 p.m. from St. Paul Lutheran Church, Java, for John K. Schlepp, 74, who passed away at his home there at 4 a.m. Thursday, December 21, 1944, after a critical illness of two days duration. Reverend L. A. Westenberger officiated at the services, and special music was rendered by Mrs. Christ Naasz and Mrs. Sam Spiry, asccompanied by Mrs. Westenberger. Interment was made in the Lutheran Cemetery.
    John K. Schlepp was born February 07, 1871, in Neudorf Province Cherson, South Russia. At the age of 15 years, he immigrated to the United States with his parents, the family arriving at Menno, South Dakota, where they resided for a time.
    On November 15, 1895, he was united in marriage to Emilie Wolf at Java, and they homesteaded on a place 20 miles northeast of Java, where they resided for about 20 years and then moved into town to make their future home and where he followed the carpenter trade.
    On October 26, 1937, his wife passed away. He had been ailing for many years but was able to be up and about until two days before his passing and his last wish was to be able to celebrate Christmas in Heaven. His death was due to dropsy. He was an industrious and thrifty man and a faithful member of the Lutheran Church at Java for many years.
    The deceased is survived by one son, Fred north of Java; one daughter, Barbara (John E.) Schlepp of south of Java; one brother, Jacob of Venturia, North Dakota; one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Dockter of Ashley, North Dakota; 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
    One daughter, Natalie, Mrs. Sam Schlepp and one son, John W. Schlepp preceded him in death.

She attended school in Java through 11th grade and graduated from Selby High School in 1950. Arelene worked as a waitress, variety store clerk, Super Products Secretary and clerk of a Nutrition Site. She also clerked auction sales with her husband for the Bowdle State Bank.
    On March 21, 1954, Arelene married Mahlon H. Gross in the Episcopalian Church in Brookings, SD.
    Arelene was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Bowdle where she taught Sunday School for many years. She served on the administration board as Secretary and Trustee and was a member of the Women’s Society for many years, holding many offices through the years. Arelene was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen which she has enjoyed thoroughly through kind and loving members, staff and devoted pastors.
    Some of the most precious people in her life were her special grandson, who brought much joy into her life, her helpful and caring sons and special care giver Tom. She loved reading Christian books (many on her Kindle Fire), her Bible and having her daily devotions. Arelene was a great Minnesota Twins fan, she loved professional ice skating, flowers, gardening and decorating for the holidays. She loved giving out Dove chocolates to friends and anyone who helped her or just plain needed a smile or uplifting. She cherished her collection of angel figurines. She enjoyed cooking, baking and doing crossword puzzles.
    Grateful for having shared Arelene’s life are her sons; Tim (Linda) Gross and Tom Gross, one grandson, one sister in law, Doris Campbell, brother-in-law, Nelvin Roebuck, and a host of nieces and nephews.
    Preceding her in death are her husband Mahlon Gross, parents, John W and Magdalena (Lena) Schlepp, three sisters, Lilian (Ellsworth) Randall, Delores (Alvin) Bauer, Mary Lou Roebuck and one brother Verton (Wally) Schlepp.

    Viola Magdalena Schlepp was born November 21, 1924 to Fred and Magdalena (Goetz) Schlepp in Java. She grew up an only child on a farm Northeast of Java and attended Hartman rural school.
    She graduated from high school in Java in 1943. After graduation she taught rural school in the Adam School District in Walworth for two years. In 1946 she went to the West Coast working at a ship yard in Vancouver, WA and later at an Army Ordnance Depot in Stockton, CA living in Lodi. Due to the illness of her father she returned to her parent's farm.
    She married Fred Mittleider on December 21, 1947. They lived on their farm near Java. In 1955 they moved to Mobridge. In 1976 after their six children were grown some and their youngest started kindergarten, she entered the work force outside her home, first as a custodian for Trinity Lutheran Church, then at the Plastic Factory.
    In 1977 she started working at JC Penny's as a clerk and also in the catalog department. She retired in 1990. She was a Sunday school teacher and served on the General Election Board.
    In April of 2006, Fred and Viola moved to Aberdeen to be closer to family. In October of 2009, they resided at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.
    Viola enjoyed reading and crocheting but most of all she enjoyed and loved her grandchildren. She loved to read to them and tell them stories and nursery rhymes. She also enjoyed watching her grandchildren play in sports.
    Survivors include two sons Clyde (Cindy) Mittleider of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim (Monica) Mittleider of Gillette, WY; three daughters Peggy Zeadow of Bladen, NE, Susan Krell of Dakota Dunes, SD, and Bonnie (Terry) Lundberg of Aberdeen, SD; 18 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.
    Casketbearers will be Chad Huber ~ Eric Roebuck ~ Dexter Krell ~ Matthew Zeadow ~ Dustin Mittleider ~ Christopher Mittleider ~ Trever Lundberg
    Honorary Bearers will be remaining grandchildren: Chad (Summer) Huber, Shawn (Shawn) Grismer, Shayne (Jesse) Huber, Courtney (Amanda) Huber, Marisa (Jason) L'Heareux, Matthew (Chris) Zeadow, Jodi (PJ) Mills, Farrgo Roebuck, Eric (Erin) Roebuck, Dexter Krell, Trisha (Randy) Crowley, Lisa (John) Clark, Christopher (Cara) Mittleider, Stacy (Richard) Visker, Dustin (Sarah) Mittleider, Tyler Lundberg, Trever Lundberg, and Tiffany Lundberg.
    She was preceded in death by her husband Fred, by her daughter Marilyn Huber, her parents, and a son-in-law Mark Zeadow.
    Viola will be buried alongside her husband Fred at the Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis.
    Viola was truly loved and will be greatly missed and will not be forgotten.
    Funeral services for Viola Mittleider, age 87, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Mobridge will be at 10 AM, Friday, December 2, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mobridge. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:30 MT under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge. A prayer service will be at 7 PM, Thursday at the funeral home. Viola passed away Monday, November 28, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.
