Verlin Ray Nicolaus was born on May 4, 1938 in Burke, South Dakota to Edwin and Frieda (Heermann) Nicolaus. At the age of 5, the family moved from Nebraska to the Nelson, Minnesota area, later settling on a farm just north of Alexandria.
Verlin was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and attended Jefferson High School, graduating in 1956. On October 22, 1974, Verlin was united in marriage to Doreen (Meyer) and continued to live in the Alexandria area. Verlin enjoyed sales and was employed with a national plumbing company. The experience in plumbing helped him to form a small company, De-Water and Sewer, while continuing to farm. Later he would continue to use his sales experience working for Alex Irrigation. After retiring, Verlin found a new place to enjoy his biggest passion, fishing by Miltona. He also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, softball, football and hunting.
At the age of seventy eight, Verlin passed away peacefully at the Douglas County Hospital on Sunday, December 18, 2016. A private service and burial has been held. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Frieda; son, David; great grandson, Gabriel Ranweiler and brother-in-law, Kermit Flom. He is survived by his wife, Doreen; children, Tom (Shelby) Peterman, Jennifer Jane (Barry) Dykhoff, Steven (Cathy) Nicolaus and Debra (Russell) Hoogendoorn; brother, Bob (Val) Nicolaus; sister, Coletta "Tootie" Flom; eight grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Verlin suffered many different health issues but was able to live his last seven years at home, with the help of his ever faithful neighbor, Dick Sorenson. He was truly grateful for all his help, visits and the wonderful gifts from his garden and raspberry patch. He loved life and was very proud of his family and his "Nebraska" heritage. May he rest in peace.
