Michael Scott Hoffman was born in Gregory on May 16, 1957 to Raymond and Frances (Kappelman) Hoffman. He grew up on the family farm south of Dallas with his two brothers Tim and Rodney. He attended Gregory Schools and graduated from Gregory High School in 1975. Mike enjoyed his childhood on the farm and it formed his enjoyment of farming and cattle. Mike worked on the family farm and in 1979 married Lisa Bachman. Two children were born into that marriage, Brooke and Michael Jr. Mike and Lisa were later divorced.
Mike met Melanie Hanson and later united in holy matrimony on September 14, 2002. Melanie had three children, Derek, Danielle and Desiree Nelson. On that day, two families joined as one, and Mike and Melanie made their home north of Gregory and took over the family farm.
He was commonly known as "Big Mike" and he lived up to that name. He enjoyed spending time with his five kids and six grandkids. Mike really enjoyed ranching and all of his cattle, but learned to relax and enjoy his family and friends and to travel. He spent most of his time outdoors, camping, fishing, hunting (especially hog hunting), hiking and four-wheeling. Mike had a strong faith in the Lord and always had many words of wisdom. He was such a joy to be around. He had a sense of humor and was truly a great hardworking man.
Mike was preparing to work cattle on Saturday morning, September 1, 2012 when he died unexpectedly of natural causes on his farm. He was 55 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers Tim and Rodney and an infant sister.
He is survived by his wife Melanie of Gregory; his daughter Brooke Hoffman of Tea and his son Michael Jr. of Timber Lake; and his three
step-children: Derek Nelson of Rapid City, Danielle Goldade of Pierre, and Desiree Nelson of Pierre; his six grandchildren: Jack Gaede, Brayden Goldade, Keira Goldade, Rylee Veskrna, Bree Nelson, Violet Nelson; and by nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
