Wayne was born in rural Hornick, on May 12, 1922 to Theodore and Freda (Unkel) Steinhoff. After losing his mother at the age of 5, he lived in various homes until his high school years when he lived with Ward and Rose Smith of Hornick.
He graduated from Hornick High School in 1940. After completing an aircraft mechanics course in Omaha, he worked for Douglas Aircraft and Kaiser Shipyards on the west coast before enlisting in the Army Air Corps in 1943. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Iowa to begin his successful career in farming. Although he retired from farming in 1984, his love for the land and interest in agriculture continued.
On June 25, 1944 he married Luella Koenig in rural Whiting. Together they celebrated 67 years of marriage and thousands of miles of travel throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan. His family was his greatest joy - especially his four grandsons. After spending 42 winters in Texas, they moved to Premier Estates in Onawa in June of 2011.
He was a member of the Hornick United Methodist Church, the Hornick American Legion, and Attica Masonic Lodge of Sloan. In past years, he was active in his community by serving on various boards.
Survivors include his wife, Luella; daughter Susan (Harvey) Matthias, and son Lael (Wanetta) Steinhoff all of rural Hornick. His four grandsons include Jeff (Allison) Matthias of Indianola, Scott (Lori) Matthias,
Brian (Teresa) Steinhoff, and Dana Steinhoff all of Hornick. He thoroughly enjoyed 7 great-grandchildren: CJ, Gabe, Addi, Abbie and Cael Matthias, Levi Smith and Taylor Steinhoff.
